How have patient-oriented research and health data been used to improve the care of patients with kidney disease?

“Music connects people. It is universal,” says Hung. “Music is not and should not be a luxury — it needs to be accessible.” 🪕

Active learning is a key part of mental health and emotional resiliency, at all ages. This study demonstrates practical ways to help support and empower people living with dementia through.

Learning music together reveals new ways to build confidence and community in dementia care.

A new Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute study led by VCHRI and Centre for Advancing Health Outcomes researcher Dr. Lillian Hung found that learning music together may help build confidence, social connection and improve quality of life of people living with dementia in the community.

By 2030, one in four Canadians will be over 65. Ensuring health care systems are resourced to meet these anticipated care needs poses a hefty challenge, especially in rural areas. A $1.3-million project co-led by Dr. Amy Salmon is looking to meet that challenge by helping older, rural adults feel safe at home.

“More than 90 per cent of Canadian seniors want and expect to be living in their home as they age, and want support to assist them in meeting their health goals as they age at home,” said Dr. Salmon. This support can include equipping people with the practical tools to stay at home, and building community connections.

Living well with rheumatoid arthritis takes daily effort. Researchers found that combining wearable activity trackers, a mobile app, and remote physiotherapist coaching helped people better manage their condition.

After 27 weeks, participants reported greater confidence in self-management, reduced disease activity, improved walking habits, and less fatigue and depression.

Yesterday was Dr. Amy Salmon's first day as the director of the Centre for Advancing Health Outcomes! 🎊

We spoke with Dr. Salmon about her history and accomplishments at the Centre, her goals for the future, and what excites her the most about taking the helm.

"BC is at a turning point in health care — we’re moving towards a future that’s both evidence-based and data-driven," she said.

Seven startup ventures founded by UBC Faculty of Medicine community members have joined the 51st cohort of UBC’s Venture Founder program to help address global challenges in areas including cancer, diabetes treatment and student .

We want to highlight the Minder team, featuring Advancing Health scientists Drs. Daniel Vigo and Chris Richardson a co-founder and team-member, respectively. This startup is working on delivering evidence-based resources to promote students’ mental well-being.

Four Faculty of Medicine researchers have been honoured with UBC’s 2025 Faculty Research Awards. The awards recognize the research excellence and scholarly achievements of faculty from across all disciplines, ranging from medicine and the applied sciences to the social sciences and humanities.

We would like to extend our congratulations to awardees, and particularly highlight Advancing Health scientist Dr. Anne Gadermann. She is a recipient of the UBC Killam Accelerator Research Fellowship, which supports early-career researchers ready to launch the next stage of their careers.
