Remembrance Day in Canada is observed annually on November 11 to honor the sacrifices of all who have served and died in the nation's defense. It commemorates the end of World War I hostilities and is a day for Canadians to pause and remember those who have fought in past and present conflicts. Key traditions include wearing a poppy, which symbolizes the soldiers who died in war, and observing two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. to mark the time the armistice was signed in 1918.

The history of the celebration now called Thanksgiving dates back thousands of years. Indigenous people living in what is now Canada have long had a tradition of celebrating a successful harvest in the fall in addition to other seasonal festivities. Harvest celebrations often included large gatherings and feasts as well as rituals and dances. All of these traditions informed Thanksgiving celebrations that European colonial settlers brought with them. The earliest known Thanksgiving celebration hosted by settlers in Canada took place in 1578.

Labour Day in Canada is a statutory holiday on the first Monday of September, observed annually since 1894 to honor workers' contributions and the labour movement's fight for fairer working conditions, a struggle that began with Toronto printers' 1872 strike. The day is now part of a long weekend for many Canadians.

t’s fitting that Jules Verne, father of science fiction, would have a dark, otherworldly gravestone. Two years after his death, a sculpture was erected atop his marker. Designed by sculptor Albert Roze, and using the actual death mask of the writer, the statue depicts the shrouded figure of Jules Verne breaking his own tombstone and emerging from the grave.

During her career in the search and rescue division of the Mexican Navy, Frida the rescue dog assisted first responders in major disasters in Haiti and Ecuador, and across Mexico. Even in retirement, she continued her service by training other dogs before she died on November 15, 2022. On November 24, 2022, the Navy held a memorial service attended by Frida’s human and canine colleagues. Her urn was placed in the base of her statue at Naval headquarters, serving as a monument to her memory.

Like everything else, end-of-life services change with the times. Though traditional funerals, rich with cultural and religious customs, are still very much preferred by some, the preference for less strict, more relaxed celebrations has gone from trend to convention. http://bit.ly/3HbSTAe
