🌍 Every year on February 15, International Childhood Cancer Day (ICCD) brings the global community together to raise awareness of childhood cancer and stand in solidarity with children, adolescents, survivors, and families affected by cancer.

This year’s theme is “Demonstrating Impact: From Challenge to Change.” It highlights how collective action is turning shared challenges into meaningful progress—while reminding us there is still work to do.

Oncology nurses play a critical role in advancing equitable, compassionate, and evidence-informed paediatric cancer care. We’re proud to support this work through our Paediatric Oncology Special Interest Group and paediatric-focused educational webinars, creating space to connect, learn, and strengthen care for young patients and their families.

Together, let’s continue to advocate, collaborate, and drive change—so every child with cancer has the opportunity to thrive.

During the month of February, we acknowledge the legacy of Black Canadian leaders and their contribution to shaping our country’s past, present and future. This year celebrates 30 Years of Black History Month, with the theme “Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations — From Nation Builders to Tomorrow’s Visionaries.”

As an organization, and within practice across the country, we recognize the health disparities that exist for Black communities and reaffirm our commitment to equity, diversity and inclusivity by embedding EDI principles in our educational offerings, processes and resources. It is important to understand the far-reaching impacts of historical injustices and systemic barriers on Black communities, which can contribute to poorer outcomes specifically for cancer diagnoses. As oncology nurses, we acknowledge our shared responsibility to address anti-Black racism and discrimination by fostering culturally safe care, listening to the voices of Black patients and nurses, and advocating for their needs within the health care system.

We encourage members to visit https://www.canada.ca/en/canadian-heritage/campaigns/black-history-month.html to learn more about significant events in Black history in Canada, as well as https://www.canada.ca/en/canadian-heritage/services/combatting-racism-discrimination/canada-anti-racism-strategy.html to learn about Changing Systems, Transforming Lives: Canada's Anti-Racism Strategy 2024-2028.
