Acupuncture for shingles!

One of the main benefits of acupuncture for shingles is its ability to provide relief from pain. Shingles can cause a significant amount of discomfort, and many people turn to over-the-counter or prescription pain medications to manage their symptoms. However, these medications can have side effects and may not be suitable for everyone. Acupuncture, on the other hand, is a natural and safe alternative that has been shown to effectively reduce pain in people with shingles!

In addition to pain relief, acupuncture helps reduce inflammation and boost the immune system. Shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. In people with a compromised immune system, the virus may reactivate and cause shingles. Acupuncture may help boost the immune system and prevent the virus from reactivating.
Another benefit of acupuncture for shingles is its potential to improve sleep. Shingles can be particularly debilitating, and many people with the condition struggle to get a good night's sleep due to pain and discomfort. Acupuncture may also help improve sleep by reducing anxiety and promoting relaxation!

Chinese Medicine and practices for the cold Winter ❄️

Winter is the season of Yin in Chinese Medicine: the shadow and inward energy. Yin is our restorative energy that helps us to slow down, rest and relax. This is a time for us to wind down and preserve our energy, as most things in nature do during the winter season.

In TCM we believe that the diet and activities in Winter should be modified to enrich Yin energy and mitigate Yang energy.

To enrich Yin energy through food, you should eat warm hearty soups, whole grains, and roasted nuts to help warm the body’s core and to keep you nourished. It is crucial to eat enough good quality protein and plenty of vegetables and fruit at each meal.

In terms of your daily routine, you should rest when needed, sleep early, stay warm, and try not to use too much of your energy. Taken together, these habits can help you keep your Yin energy up and maintain good health through the cold winter season.

Depression and My Mental Health journey 🌱

Today I want to share with you my story of battling depression. I have learned a lot of helpful lessons and tips during my mental health healing journey that believe can add value to your life as well regardless of where you are today with your own mental health.

20 years ago, I was having a hard time with everything that I was facing in my life. I eventually fell into a depression from the misconception of a lack of hope I had for my situation and the future. As things remained difficult, the symptoms of my mental state began to kick in. I was staying in bed all day, had low energy, and had no motivation to cook food or leave my home.

Feeling stuck with no way to escape, I visited a specialist doctor searching for answers. He was patient with me and even gave me a guidebook about how to cope with depression. My doctor asked if I felt worse when I first get up or through the day. I told him that I felt horrible in the morning, and go slowly better through the day. This answer showed him that my irregular emotional state was due to a chemical imbalance as opposed to a psychological one.

After I read the book and learned about different depression-coping methods, I decided to try being more accountable for my day. I called a few of my friends and asked them to help keep me accountable. However, everyone was pretty busy and could not help me as much. There was one friend that I reached out to who was determined to help me recover. She was able to call me every day just to have a simple conversation and help me leave my home sometimes. Another useful tip from the book was that I needed to become more accountable for my own actions, such as showing up to “do something” every day, even if it was a “small something” such as showering every day at 9 am or eating at 10 am. Additionally, I started doing acupuncture to help regulate my emotional imabalnce and help me feel more revitalized when I wake up in the morning. Acupuncture can help to improve your mood and motivation, stimulating the production of “happy hormones”. Slowly but surely, I started to get back on track by making little changes every day and with the support of my dear friend’s constant help and care.

There are three main takeaways I’d like you to hold on to from my battle with depression:

We need good, reliable friends to support us on our mental and physical health journeys. Only with the support of our peers can we break away from our isolation and know we are not facing our problems alone.
We should not be judgemental about people with depression; it is not laziness, boredom, or attention-seeking behaviour. Experience has taught me that it is an internal struggle that is truly hard to deal with and greatly impacts everything else in your life.
Acupuncture can aid in the process of balancing the chemical imbalance of the body which can result in several different issues. The severity of my depression was greatly mitigated through the regular use of acupuncture to reset my emotional balance and provide me with the foundation to begin healing.

If you are struggling or know someone else who is battling depression, know that you are not alone and that there are people and solutions that can help you just as they have helped me. If you would like to try acupuncture for depression and emotional regulation, call (778)320-3332 to book your free consultation today. Everyone is welcome, no matter where your mental health healing journey is.

You are never too old to begin your healing journey 🌱

As the years go by and we start to grow older, many of us start to develop the idea that it is “too late for me” to get well again.

However, we should not let this thinking limit us from trying to make a difference in our health. It’s time to take charge and not let your age stop you.

Medical researcher Dr.King at the Medical University of South Carolina reports that it is never too late to start improving our health. She says "Some people in middle age don't change, because they think the damage is done. In fact, the chances of dying or having a heart attack were reduced by a third after just four years of living a healthier lifestyle than before."

It is never too late to turn your health around. Try acupuncture today as a part of your healthy lifestyle!

How TCM supports the Body’s Energy System ☀️

We all have those days where we feel a little under the weather and low on energy. However, when these days start to occur more frequently than normal, we are living in a state of overall energy deficiency.

The central purpose of acupuncture is to encourage a good flow of energy, or “qi” in Chinese medicine, in the body. In the case of having low energy and fatigue, acupuncture targets your qi flow in your body. This makes acupuncture especially effective and rapid at boosting your energy levels because it directly targets qi concentration by mitigating energy blockages, helping you feel more awake and revitalized.

Acupuncture for sleep ❤️ 💤

We all have encountered those restless nights when we can’t quite get ourselves to fall asleep. This often results in a sluggish, unproductive day as the sleep we need to function and maintain our health has been cut short. However, we do not have to continue suffering and lying awake through the night. Acupuncture can greatly aid in mitigating the struggle of our sleep issues.

Neurologist Gary Stanton who is a sleep medicine specialist at Emerson Hospital in Concord highly recommends acupuncture for his patients struggling with sleep disorders. He says “Despite the skepticism of some physicians, acupuncture is increasingly an evidence-based medicine. I consider it to be one among several treatment options for a variety of problems, including pain and sleep.”

Additionally, a 2017 study found that acupuncture was more effective at improving insomnia symptoms, sleep efficiency, and increased total sleep time during treatment.

Diet and Traditional Chinese Medicine 🌿🍜

Healthy eating habits are the foundation for good health in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Without a healthy diet, our bodies do not have the necessary nutritional support to begin healing with TCM. A nourishing diet primarily consists of vegetables, fruits, complex carbohydrates, healthy fats and proteins. In TCM, you should eat according to your body constitution, current health conditions and current season.

In terms of foods to avoid, too many sweets and deep-fried dishes damage the spleen. Because the spleen and stomach meridians form a pair that is responsible for digestion, eating these foods will impair the digestive system’s capacity to properly function. This leads to bloating, gas, fatigue, and foggy thinking.

Start eating a healthier, balanced diet based on whole foods, vegetables, and protein to ensure your body is supplied with the right nutrients to begin healing and thriving!

THE PASSIONATE PURSUIT OF PAIN-FREE HAPPINESS

Registered Acupuncturist & Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner

After graduating from the 5-year Doctor of Traditional Chinese medicine program, Peter found his passion in acupuncture. He decided to focus his practice in acupuncture to help his patients. In the early days of his practice, Peter found that what he learned in medical school, while it was good and reliable knowledge, did not produce results fast enough for his liking. He understood that when people were suffering from pain, they would like to have relief as soon as possible.

To quote one master of acupuncture: “Under normal circumstances, you should be able to feel a reduction of pain shortly after the insertion of needles.” Subsequently, Peter sought out the best in the field of acupuncture and spent hundreds of hours, under their tutelage, learning and improving his treatment techniques. His main goal is to help you find relief from your pain and other ailments as quickly as possible.

Other than treating pains in his clinic, Peter treats many stress related ailments, emotion related issues, weight problems and works with internal medicine. Peter would like to invite you to come experience his treatments first hand.
