S*x workers, like all service industries, rely on online ads to expand and communicate with clients. However, third party criminalization and censorship impede access to essential advertising tools. Learn more in this new poster: bit.ly/3RKvCdH

Online communication is linked to reduced violence as it can help with client screening. AESHA project data shows that when *xworkers + third parties use vague terminology to avoid criminalization, the ambiguity impacts their earnings & distorts client expectations.

Due to the criminalization of im/migrant s*x work, advertising can be even more difficult for racialized and im/migrant workers who fear their online activity will lead to workplace raids.

To improve s*x workers' access to essential advertising and screening tools, evidence supports the recommendations in the image below ⬇️

For *xWorkersDay, we are spreading awareness on the occupational health and safety of s*x workers.

A recent study by the explored s*x workers' psychosocial wellbeing and access to s*xual health services through conducting interviews with s*x workers and their third-party supports. Findings showed that s*x workers faced limited access to s*xual health education, testing and workplace training as well as challenges in implementing best practices for occupational health and safety.

Researchers, do you need help navigating pre/post research processes like funding applications, ethics review and publication? Check out Tool 8 of 's Gender & S*x in Methods & Measurement Research Equity Toolkit!

In research, a lot happens before and after we design and conduct a study – we need to apply for funding, get ethical approval before we start, and publish our results after we’ve finished! Tool #8 focuses on navigating such pre/post research activities. It explores ways to think about the practice of identity disclosure, when and how to engage s*x and gender subject matter experts, and the politics and ethics of publishing raw datasets. And much more!

However, the team has always envisioned the website’s long-term future to be in the hands of a community-based organization. This summer marks the realization of this vision as the project shifts hands from REAFFIRM to QMUNITY, BC’s q***r, trans and Two-Spirit resource centre.

Centre for Gender and S*xual Health Equity (CGSHE)

Building on extensive efforts of the UBC gender & s*xual health program housed at the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS since 2010, and the UBC Youth S*xual Health Team, the CGSHE draws on a well-established infrastructure of research, education, policy, and knowledge translation.

CGSHE aims to foster collaborative academic-health networks across health authorizes and community/policy partners to address and promote gender & s*xual health equity for under-serviced populations, including history of collaborations with Vancouver Coastal Health Authority, BC Ministry of Health, Provincial Health Services Authority (BC Women’s Hospital and Health Centre, Trans Care BC, BC Centre for Disease Control), and the First Nations Health Authority.

Since its inception, CGSHE has regularly provided expert evidence and consultation at local, national and international levels. As leaders in the field of gender and s*xual health equity, we have contributed to a number of health and policy guidelines in governmental and non-governmental agencies including: provincial health authorities, municipal government, the BC Ministry of Health, Public Health Agency of Canada, Status of Women Canada, the World Health Organization, UNAIDS, the UN Population Fund, International AIDS Society, International Association of Providers of AIDS Care, WHO departments of reproductive health and HIV, and Global Commission on HIV and the Law.
