Over 30 years in practice with 19 professionals using advanced techniques of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Body Centered Therapies. We don’t have a blanket approach to your problem. Based on our initial session, We will tailor make a treatment plan that fits your specific needs, because everyone is unique in their life journey. We draw on a multitude of different approaches and will customize a treatment plan based on your goals. Our counsellors have the ability to compassionately and lovingly point out behaviours that are unproductive and/or harmful without shaming or making you feel bad. We believe in cultivating kindness, respect and understanding. Our approach in one-on-one counselling is to use a combination of talk therapy and awareness of what is taking place in your body. This helps you understand more clearly and quickly the truth of the matter and helps you access your inner resources, strengths and wisdom. This wisdom is accessed when the mind is calmed down and the awareness is settled in the body. We help you reconnect with the wisdom you already have which allows you to make decisions from a place of confidence and clarity, rather than from what you think you should do or what someone else suggests you should do.

"When you're anxious your body is suddenly flooded with norepinephrine and cortisol. In the short term, these hormones are intended to give you an immediate boost, whether it be in perception, reflexes, or mental acuity. In the long term, when anxiety does not go away, it can exhaust your brain and other bodily functions.

Prolonged anxiety can physically alter the makeup of your amygdala and hippocampus, which are areas of the brain related to an anxiety or stress response.

While anxiety treatment medication targets these areas of the brain, they aren’t the only way to reach them - Direct Neurofeedback has proved to be a very effective treatment for not only anxiety but also depression, ADHD, and the effects of concussions."

When you’re on a local road, you know you can pull into the next parking lot, if you really have to. You always have an escape route, or a way to “get out”. But when you’re travelling on a highway, that freedom is taken away. You’re stuck in the flow of traffic, and your control is gone.

Big “T” traumas often seem less obvious than small 't' traumas because they happen during childhood, when we are more helpless, vulnerable and easily overwhelmed. They can often leave even bigger scars in our psyche than the big “T” traumas.

Because they happen in our early developmental years it might not be thought of as unusual. They just feel part of the tapestry of our everyday household life.

If you think you’ve never had trauma, and that the challenges you experience are because “there’s something wrong with you”, please think again. It’s time to
stop blaming and shaming yourself.

Your symptoms are a normal reaction to abnormal events.

The brain is like your body, it can be trained to be stronger, more efficient and have greater stamina. All of which makes you more resilient.

People with anxiety, depression or trauma tend to have either an over-active or under-active nervous system, which is often experienced as hyper vigilance (being always on guard), intrusive thoughts or memories, insomnia, abrupt mood swings, hyperactivity, difficulty concentrating, lack of energy and more.

This means that the ‘fight, flight or freeze’ response is overactive, creating hyper or hypo arousal of the nervous system.

Some people talk about feeling always “ON”.

Direct Neurofeedback works directly on reducing the ‘fight, flight or freeze’ response, to allow the brain and body to relax and the nervous system to reset itself.

This improves resilience, increases calmness, and restores the ability to better handle stress.

At the end of each session, you are likely to feel more relaxed, ‘lighter’, and yet energized.

After completing a full course of treatment these benefits become lasting and sessions are no longer needed.

We are a counselling firm based in Vancouver B.C., (formerly known as the Alpine Anxiety and Stress Relief Clinic) and serving the Lower Mainland since 1991 with Claire Maisonneuve as director.

We are comprised of thirteen professionals – psychologists, registered clinical counsellors, registered social worker and direct neurofeedback technicians.
