MEN’S HEALTH | AWARENESS
November is Men’s Health Month

This month, we’re shining a light on men’s fertility health because caring for your reproductive health is caring for your overall well-being.

Male fertility is just as important as female fertility yet it’s often overlooked. Around half of all couples who face infertility have at least one male-factor concern, and research shows that average sperm counts have dropped by nearly 50% in developed countries.

Why is this happening?
Modern life plays a big role. Stress, poor sleep, smoking or vaping, heat exposure, environmental toxins, and certain health conditions can all affect sperm quality and count.

The good news? Many of these factors are treatable and reversible with the right lifestyle changes, testing, and support.

Many people don’t realize that infertility isn’t just a women’s issue. In fact, at least 40–50% of couples who experience difficulty conceiving have a contributing male factor such as low sperm count, reduced motility (movement), or abnormalities in sperm shape or function.

Male infertility is common, diagnosable, and often treatable. A semen analysis is a simple first step that can provide important insights and help guide the next steps in your fertility journey.

FERTILITY GRANTS | ANNOUNCEMENT
The Lucy of Anishinaabe Fertility Grant
Support Indigenous families’ fertility

The Lucy of Anishinaabe Fertility Grant serves as a tribute to Lucy’s resilience and as a beacon of hope for Indigenous individuals seeking support on their journey to parenthood.

Fertility Friends Foundation is honoured to introduce the Lucy of Anishinaabe Fertility Grant in partnership with G. Scott and Sarah Paterson. Members of indigenous communities often encounter significant barriers when seeking access to fertility treatments. Historical traumas, systemic inequalities and cultural barriers have all contributed to these disparities. They may also face challenges such as geographic isolation, lack of culturally sensitive care, and limited financial resources.

“As an Indigenous person who has personally struggled with fertility issues, this grant feels like the perfect alignment of my personal experiences and my desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others within my community.

I want to express my deepest gratitude to the Fertility Friends Foundation for entrusting me with this opportunity. I am honoured to be a part of this vital work, and I look forward to the journey ahead.

To my fellow indigenous individuals and families, know that you are not alone. Together, we will continue to persevere, thrive, and create a better world for generations to come."

Sarah Paterson | Great-granddaughter of Lucy

Eligibility criteria for Lucy of Anishinaabe Fertility Grant applicants:

· Open to First Nations, Inuit, Métis, and other Indigenous peoples.

· Applicants (and partner, if applicable) must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents.

· At least one applicant must be First Nations, Inuit, or Métis.

· Proof of community membership (Status/Métis/Inuit card) required.

CFAS 2025: Centre des Congrès de Québec, Québec City

Patient-Centred Fertility Medicine: Balancing Scientific Advancements, Best Clinical Practices and Holistic Health

Learning, sharing research, and connecting with colleagues from across Canada. Proud to showcase our work and represent Olive on the national stage.

Olive Fertility CFAS research highlights:

💡Dr. Gary Nakhuda on:

Vibe Coding: A User-Friendly Computer Vision Tool for Automated Sperm DNA Fragmentation Classification

The project uses computer vision and machine learning to make sperm DNA analysis faster, more accurate, and user-friendly. Since high DNA fragmentation can affect fertility and embryo development, this tool addresses limitations of current slow, inconsistent methods. By integrating open-source tools like OpenCV and Google’s TensorFlow, the team created a coding system
that makes classification easier, scalable, and reproducible for lab scientists.

🔬Sharlene Sonnenberg IVF Nurse presented:

BCL6 as a Marker of Uterine Lining Inflammation: A Retrospective Analysis of Treatment and Outcomes in Canada’s Largest User

BCL6 is a marker linked to endometrial inflammation, which can affect implantation and pregnancy outcomes. This study looked at patients with positive vs. negative BCL6 results and found that treating those with inflammation improved pregnancy and live birth rates compared to untreated patients.

______________

📊Dr. Gary Nakhuda and Carlo Mendoza (Data Analyst) presented:

Elevated Serum Progesterone Concentrations are Associated with Lower Ongoing Pregnancy Rates in Modified Natural Cycle FET Protocols

The research shows that when progesterone levels are too high in modified natural frozen embryo transfer (FET) cycles, pregnancy rates are lower. This could help refine monitoring and treatment strategies for better outcomes.
