Today, we’re highlighing , local Vancouver restauranteur and creative, and the Co-Founder & Creative Director of & .ca.

“Our extended family gathers at our grandparents, or eldest of our parents’ generation for a family meal. We eat sticky glutenous rice wrapped in lotus seed, pork belly and egg stew, crab and noodles, and all sorts of fruits and candy that is eaten on Lunar New Year. An important part of the tradition is also dressing up in the Vietnamese traditional “áo dài” and sharing lucky red envelopes and well wishes, from married elders to younger members of the family. Together we eat, laugh, cry and have a loud and fun time on Lunar New Years Day!”

“Lunar New Year is a family event always spent over a huge meal on New Year’s Eve. My mother, who is a fantastic chef, cooks up a storm consisting of usually 8 dishes. Each dish symbolizes something positive for the new year, whether it is fish for abundance, black moss for prosperity, whole chicken for togetherness and good luck, or shrimp for happiness. We honour elders by pouring a sweet tea, and in exchange receive red envelopes containing lucky money. We also wear red, and put up red banners with auspicious phrases throughout the house.

My favourite Lunar New Year tradition is hearing my mother recount the ancient Chinese legends and stories of her former customs from festival season. Although I’ve heard these stories countless times, it is a tradition that carries nostalgia and comfort”
