If you’ve been referred for an imaging technique like an MRI or CT scan to investigate your pain, you’re probably already a bit freaked out about what’s going on inside your body. And then you have the scan and get an essay long report basically saying that multiple bombs have gone off in your body and you are doomed…well, that’s what it feels like when we read these reports.
I’ve spent hours of time reassuring clients about their imaging findings. Most of the big words that are used (like spondylosis or degeneration) are typical changes that we expect beyond 30ish years of age. Yup, I hate to say it, but that’s when we start degenerating.
The good news? This is usually “normal”, within normal limits, and most often does NOT correlate with your pain or function, and many scientific studies will back this up. Scans are great to rule out the scary stuff, but a thorough assessment is much more useful in assessing and treating your pain.
So when you get your scan report, ask questions and your physio (or other qualified healthcare professional) can put the essay of big, scary words into perspective for you.

Spring is in the air! Are you ready for the upcoming golf season? Now is the perfect time to come in for a TPI Golf Screen. This screen is a physical assessment of 17 movement patterns that are important for a golf swing. Understanding these patterns can help identify physical limitations that affect your swing and can contribute to pain or injuries. If you want to play your best golf, this is the best place to start. DM for more info, or if you’re curious if this screen is right for you. Ready to book? Click the link in my profile.

Pain is often misunderstood, especially when it becomes chronic. This is a nice little article summarizing a few pieces of what the current research tells us about pain.

New research says yes. Fortunately, there's something we can do about it.

Monday is “bike ride day”. That’s what’s in my calendar. That’s what I do every week. I woke up Monday morning this week and didn’t feel like going for a bike ride. Was I being lazy? Unmotivated? So I asked myself a simple question.
What does my body need right now?
To clarify, I didn’t ask my body what it wanted. I asked it what it NEEDED. Big difference.
When I listened, I heard “rest”, “recovery”, “recuperation” following a very active weekend. So I skipped my bike ride and chose a morning yoga session in the living room sunshine instead.
“Wants” can skew what our body truly needs with what is familiar, habitual, easy, or driven by external pressure, whether related to our diet, exercise or mental health practices. Craving sugar? Want a beer? Dragging yourself out for that run? I challenge you to pause and ask yourself, “is this what my body really needs right now?”
And if you have no idea what your body needs but know it’s not what you are currently giving it, it’s probably time for a check-in with a healthcare professional, whether your Physio, Naturopath, or exercise specialist.
