Introducing The Feeding Group!

As we began to offer a greater range of services to support families, we outgrew the Picky Eating Vancouver name. We needed a name that better represented the full scope of our services, and that is how we became The Feeding Group.

Will your little one only eat the same kind of cracker over and over and over?

Here's a simple strategy that will:
🐡 Help expand the variety of foods they like
🐡 Make sure they don't start to reject their favourite foods

Many picky eaters can develop rigidity around what, where, and how foods are offered. By making small changes we can help relax some of this rigidity and prevent further restriction of the foods they like.

Let us know below what foods your little one used to love and now won't touch 🙅🏻‍♀️

Make sure to save & share, this is definitely a tip you'll want to come back to!

Comparison can quickly spiral to feelings of worry, inadequacy, or jealousy. As Moms, we've been there too.

However, it's important to remember that every child is unique and develops at a slightly different pace. We often find this particularly apparent when introducing and advancing solids. Just like walking or talking, oral motor skills develop on their own schedule.

As long as you're:
✔️providing opportunities for your child to progress along their own developmental continuum
✔️responsive to their feeding needs
✔️seeing developmental gains over time..then try not to compare them to others.

If you're unsure how to progress textures or you're worried about your child's oral motor development, please reach out we're here to help.

If you have a picky eater, you've likely heard or been told this, but we're here to bust the myth that kids won't starve themselves.

Yes, children have a natural sense of when they're hungry and when they're full and they often listen to that sense better than adults do.

However, if they don't have the skills to eat the foods they're given (such as oral motor difficulties, sensory processing disorders) or if eating is painful or associated with negative experiences (such as perceived pressure to eat, choking, vomiting, reflux), they will not eat regardless of how hungry they are.

In fact, this sort of "test" can contribute to their negative experiences and heighten the stress response associated with eating which will in turn lead to more picky eating and defensive feeding behaviours.

Meet Lauren and Elise 😷
Moms, pediatric feeding therapists, entrepreneurs, lovers of French pastries and neutral colours.

Lauren & Elise first crossed paths in high school, but with one in grade 8 and the other in grade 12, they weren’t hanging out at the same parties (and their lips are sealed as to who’s older).

Years later they met again on the Oncology ward at BC Children’s Hospital where they both worked. After teaming up to help support patients at the hospital with feeding challenges, they came up with the idea to combine their expertise in Occupational Therapy and Dietetics to help families prevent and treat picky eating.

They scribbled notes and shared ideas while watching the waves in Venice Beach during their lunch break at a specialized course called the SOS Approach To Feeding.

As Moms, Lauren & Elise understand the frustration when your kid refuses to even try a bite or throws their spoon on the floor for the millionth time and the worry that they're not getting the nutrients they need.

Empowered with the combined expertise to address all the factors that contribute to eating issues and a passion to help families feeling stressed and frustrated with feeding their kids, Picky Eating Vancouver was born.

We're honoured and excited to have you along for the journey!

Too often we see worries about nutrition and growth result in counterproductive feeding techniques that break down a healthy, trusting feeding relationship.

As parents ourselves, we 100% understand the desire (and pressure) to make sure your child is thriving. But we want to make sure parents do so in a way that maintains trust and respect with their child.

If you’re comfortable, tell us what worries you have (or had) about your child’s growth or nutrition below 👇🏻 or head to our stories and share with us privately. We want to better understand how we can help and support you and your family ❤️

HELP my kid doesn’t eat vegetables!

It’s probably one of the most common concerns we hear from parents of picky eaters. And while there are certainly things we do to work on increasing acceptance of vegetables, it’s less often a nutrition concern for us as long as they enjoy a variety of fruits.

So this is your reminder that:
🥦 It’s OK if they don’t eat the broccoli at dinner
🥦 Fruits & veggies provide similar nutrients
🥦 Offer a variety of fruits & veggies throughout the day
🥦 Ditch the pressure tactics to get them to eat the darn broccoli

What veggie does your kid refuse that you want us to compare next? Tell us below👇🏻 and be sure to save this post for future reference!
