To repair is to be vulnerable đź’ť

Real vulnerability is more than simply “opening up”. It’s about holding space for discomfort, for yourself and others. It’s also about holding that discomfort without stumbling into defence or blame.

Vulnerability is layered.
It is the courage to share your own experience,
to let yourself be seen without certainty of how it will land.

It is the humility to admit, something I did had an impact on you, even if my intent was different.

The restraint to stay present without attacking or placing blame, and without armoring myself with justification.

And it is the openness to listen without defending, to hold another’s truth alongside my own.

Vulnerability is a courageous humility that keeps connection alive.

I just received a beautiful set of updated headshots by the talented photographer and I felt inspired to reintroduce myself.

So, hello and welcome to my page! I’m Niseema, a somatic counsellor focused on all things surrounding relationships and intimacy.

I’m based in Vancouver, BC with a cozy office on Commercial Drive, I also offer virtual sessions for folks who can’t make it to my physical office.

I’ve been on this journey since 2013, when I began studying somatic s3x and relationship coaching, and transitioned into somatic counselling in 2018.

I’m so deeply grateful to be doing this work, and even more so for each person who chooses to entrust me with their story and nervous system.

The only task of the weekend was simple: to find sourdough and to feel restored among the birds and the foxglove. In the quiet of that intention, something deeper began to take root.

For beautiful things to grow, within ourselves, and within love- intentional space must be made. Space to nurture the self as a whole person, and space to tend to the relationship as something living, too.

Sometimes, someone shows up and loves you so fully that you pause. You take space, to make space, for the richness that’s rising to the surface. And in that pause, your nervous system breathes a little deeper, a little easier. You begin to sip slowly from the sweetness of what’s to come… together.

This quote “Trauma was not your fault but Healing is your responsibility” is a crock and I hope people stop quoting that ableist classist barfy nonsense.

Healing trauma is community responsibility, it should never be expected for a victim/survivor to have the onus on them and them alone. Funding support is a beautiful way for survivors to access community healing, which can absolutely be a part of Justice for a person who has experienced trauma.

It’s takes a whole entire village: The survivor, the therapist (and the therapists therapist), the friends and family who show up, our pets and other comfort creatures. The artists and writers who create healing words and visuals, the artisans who create soft cozy fabrics to wrap ourselves in. The people who work to create and manage funding programs like CVAP, and the generations before and after us who share their own healing pieces with us along the way (sometimes through our skin and sometimes in the whispers in the wind).

Hi folks! It’s that time again! I’m offering a few pro-bono or low cost spots to a select few new clients, 3 spots available.

I have one spot for a couple and two spots for individuals. In person spots will range from $25-$50 per hour session and virtual spots range from $0-$50, depending on your needs. The offer is for 4-6 sessions, based on interest and availability. Work can continue beyond this agreement at a higher sliding scale, to be discussed in more detail in the consultation.

My specialization is in relationships and intimacy through a somatic lens. I utilize various somatic modalities including somatic experiencing, art therapy, gestalt, Somatica method and a few others.

If you’re interested in working together, please email me to arrange a free consultation and assess if I’m the best fit for your needs.

I remember at a training I attended years ago, we were doing an exercise around embodied boundaries. I was still very new in my personal growth journey, which included my development and understanding of boundaries.

We were instructed to pair up and somatically explore our boundaries in relation to another person.

I remember standing in front of my partner
thinking “this seems easy..” and as they began walking closer to me, I was smiling, thinking.. “This is easy, I can go SO far!” Almost expecting to be praised for how far I could go “look how good I am, look at me not having any boundaries!”.

And then something happened, as I looked around the room at other people having their experiences… “I think I don’t really get it… I don’t feel anything…”.

Confusion.

It was in that moment I realized… There wasn’t “no boundaries”, there was just “nothing”.

There was a complete absence of any feeling or sensation, my system was offline. I know now I was engaged in appeasement, which is a very familiar to me threat response (I can recognize that now, after many years of personal work).

It was in that moment that I realized I didn’t know what a boundary was and I certainly wasn’t connected to how a boundary felt in my body.

I began writing this story at the beginning of day 2 in a training I’m attending this weekend and partway through my writing, the instructor began giving instruction for a boundary exercise. I realized we were about to do the very thing I was writing about, which felt very interesting. A sort of book end.

My experience of today’s practice was so much different, I was very clear in where my boundary was. I didn’t need or even want to explore it, it was crystal clear.

Which brings me to this reflection, this beautiful place of evolving “how much can I withstand?” to “how much is enough?”.

I CAN carry the weight of the world, but I don’t actually NEED to.
