24HrDay A raw, hopeful story of resilience and recovery — and a daily system to help you live with purpose. Created by cancer survivor Bob Cain.

Well that’s a wrap on the 2025/2026 NFL season, my favorite season in a long time for the sport where most of the usual suspects didn’t not see the playoffs. Parity has been restored, is Seattle the next dynasty? Are the Cheifs, Ravens, Eagles, Vikings Bucs and 49ers done for a few years?

Are the Browns on the rise? 🙂. Don’t laugh.

Great to spend the day chatting about such matters of importance with my son Niall today. We had a nice time. And as for the half time show, I think it was good. Messages of love and hope. Music was postive and grew on me.

A decent sunset to boot.

Good night good people.

I want to be honest — the last few days were really hard.

Pain, malfunctioning tubes, another setback with blood clots, and scary news about a new blood infection pushed me to a breaking point. I was exhausted and overwhelmed in a way that’s hard to describe. I sobbed uncontrollably for about half an hour — just completely emptied out. D’Arcy stayed with me and helped me ride it out.

After nearly 36 hours of deep sleep and some much-needed space, I’m feeling steadier again. Focus is slowly returning.

I was moved to a new floor today with an incredible view of the mountains, the water, and the city. Perspective matters. I’m already looking forward to seeing this view on a clear morning and at sunset when the light hits just right.

The kids are here, and we’re painting together.

This isn’t all roses and positivity.
Still fighting. Still real. Still moving forward.

And hey — we’ve got the Olympics to watch over the next few weeks, which is pretty great.
Then the Super Bowl. If it can’t be the Browns, it’s always Niagara pride for the Bills. After they got robbed… well, picking a third team isn’t easy — but if it has to be anyone else, I’ll go with Vancouver’s team in this beautiful city.

Go Seahawks. 💚💙

Health Update 💛

After getting right down to the wire with my discharge, the doctors decided to keep me a few extra days because my G-tube procedure site still isn’t fully healed. My weakened state and the chemo have slowed down my body’s ability to heal normally.

The good news is my Gastrointestinal Surgery team and Surgical Oncology team also decided that while I’m still here, it’s best to insert a second discreet feeding tube that will go beyond my stomach and past the duodenum. They believe the drip feeding will be more effective and help me absorb nutrition better while my body continues to recover.

I’ll also get an additional 4–5 days of IV nutrition, which can only help — about 2500 calories/day automatically, on top of whatever I can get in through the tube. The goal is to keep putting weight back on and rebuilding strength.

Right now I’m back up to 143 lbs, up from my low point last week at 137 lbs ✅

All in all, this is a good thing — it just means the hospital is home base a little while longer. At least everything is completely ready for me to go home when the day arrives. My kids are all here, and I’ll make the most of my day passes (I’m pretty exhausted after 5–6 hours out anyway).

Hope you’re all having a great day.

Love, Bob 💛

Yay — look who showed up for the weekend! 🙌🍾

My buddies are here from Ontario and we kicked things off last night with a sunset dinner at Cactus Club at English Bay — unreal views, great vibes, and lots of laughs.

When we arrived, I casually mentioned to the host that I was on a day pass from the hospital and my friends were in town visiting… and they surprised us by comping a round of Prosecco to start the night. 🥂 Classy move.

Dinner was amazing… but then came the plot twist. 😅

After the meal, I walked back into the restaurant to check my drainage system. As I was walking carefully through a narrow walkway between the bar stools and the tables (about 3 feet wide), I didn’t notice someone had placed a gym bag behind their stool.

Still weak and moving slowly, I clipped the bag with my right foot…

…and down I went like a sack of potatoes. 💥🫠

Between the leg muscle loss from months on dexamethasone and my current “baby deer learning to walk” energy… I couldn’t even get up on my own.

The server and host rushed over and helped me up — and I was totally fine (just a bruised ego 😄).

Good news? They ended up comping almost our entire $400 meal.
Worth it. 😂

All in all — an amazing night, lots of laughs, and I’m beyond grateful to have my friends here.

Today: Bills game, chill for a few hours, and then out for dinner tonight with more friends.

Let’s see if I can stay on my feet today… 😄

GO BILLS GO!! 🏈💙❤️

My second watercolor painting 🎨🌍

I’m thinking of framing this and gifting it to my surgeon, Dr. Andrea MacNeill, when I head home Sunday.

She’s been leading my care for the last two years, and she’s also the Medical Director of Planetary Health at UBC + Vancouver General Hospital.

One thing I’ve learned through all of this:
trust your medical team, follow the science, and build real human relationships with the people caring for you.
It matters more than people realize.

Earth looks a little like an egg 😂🥚🌎
But honestly… that feels about right.

Not perfect. Still beautiful. Still healing.
Just like us.

Going to be a gorgeous day — and a stellar weekend — Vancouver! ☀️💙
Nothing but sunshine, blue skies, and 9–10°C ahead.

Today Greg Robles and Jamie Hodges arrive for a 3-day visit 🙌
My day pass starts at 10 AM, and I’m thinking we’ll take the gondola up Grouse for lunch, snap some photos, and get a nice little walk in.

Tomorrow we’ve got a full day of fun planned — house party for the Bills game 🏈🔥 and then dinner with Alex Fraser and crew.

And Sunday… I’m getting discharged from the hospital. ❤️
Everything is set up for palliative care at home now, so this is the beginning of the transition where D’Arcy and I manage things on our own.

I also want to say this: the care I’ve received at Vancouver General Hospital has been absolutely top notch. I truly believe it’s the best hospital in BC — and maybe all of Canada — after spending the past 2.5 months here.

I’ve made so many friends: doctors across multiple specialties, four different surgical teams, and hundreds of nurses. And honestly… I never felt like I was “stuck in a hospital.”
I felt safe, cared for, and genuinely happy every single day I’ve been here.

VGH has a special history too — it’s the main hospital in Vancouver, and its first nursing school was founded in 1899, originally to serve the British Empire. There’s a goodness in this place… in the rooms and in the halls… that I can only describe as something like angels watching over the people here.

I’ve even experienced a few things I can’t fully explain rationally — things I’ve been writing about in my third book, Warrior. You’ll have to wait for the book to see what I mean… but let’s just say it’s reinvigorated my belief that there’s so much more to life than what we can understand through our five senses.

Anyway… look at that sunrise. 🌅
It’s going to be a great 24HrDay.

Love,
Bob ❤️

Today we treat ourselves to pedicures.
I’m going with blue, red, and white on alternating toes to represent the Buffalo Bills on their Super Bowl run.

Go Bills. 🦬🔥

Real talk for the guys out there 👇
Regular foot care isn’t vanity — it’s health.

• Nail & cuticle care helps prevent ingrown nails, infections, and painful cracking
• Foot & leg exfoliation removes dead skin, improves circulation, and supports healthier skin regeneration
• Massage reduces tension, improves blood flow, and helps with recovery if you’re active or on your feet a lot
• Overall foot hygiene = better comfort, posture, and fewer aches over time

Since doing this every 4–6 weeks, my feet have genuinely never been healthier.
If you haven’t tried it yet — trust me, you’ll walk out wondering why you waited so long.

Look who arrived today for a two-week visit! 💙

It’s Lauren and Luke!!

Our friends Krishan, Preeya and Bianca showed up to see us at home too.

Things are stabilizing with my recent surgery, so I’m now able to have 8-hour day passes from 9 AM–5 PM. TJ allows me to receive IV nutrition from 5 PM to 9 AM each night, which is helping keep everything on track while I heal.

My new target discharge date is January 18, as long as the surgery continues to heal enough for me to use the direct feeding/venting tube into my stomach.

Then the fun really begins.
Aidan, Oliver, Noah, Niall, and Rachel arrive January 19, and we’ve got an amazing Airbnb booked for a week at one of my favourite places — Belcarra Provincial Park, with Buntzen Lake, Sasamat Lake, and the ocean beaches along Indian Arm.
If the weather cooperates, we might even get out on the SUP dock. 🙏

Niall and Rachel will be here until the end of the month.
I’m so happy — and honestly just grateful to be alive — and to be finding my way back toward some semblance of normal life while I continue to write through this chapter.

And I have to say…
I had the best shower of my life this morning getting ready to head back out into the world. 🚿✨

Hope you all are having a great weekend. Go Bills!!!!

Love,
Bob

🎶 “Fact or Fiction” by Hollow Coves captures something deep about truth, connection, and what really matters in life — and it perfectly echoes the message behind my book series: that planetary health starts with self-care, then taking better care of each other, and finally care for the Earth, our home.

The song reflects on how we’re all searching for meaning and connection in a world full of noise — and what could happen if we chose unity and strength over division.
