Concussion care has come a long way!

A new review (Stavitz, James et al. 2026) of 25 years of research shows that the old approach of “just rest” is no longer the best path to recovery. Instead, today’s evidence supports a more active, personalized approach that looks at the whole picture: brain function, balance, neck health, mental well-being, and more.

Early light exercise, targeted rehab, structured return-to-school plans, and mental health support are all shown to help athletes recover faster and more effectively.

Context: Sport-related concussion (SRC) management has evolved substantially over the past 25 years. Early paradigms emphasized prolonged physical and cognitive rest; however, growing evidence has demonstrated that recovery following SRC is multidimensional and influenced by interacting neurological...

"I don't care how good of a treatment plan you come up with. I don't care what research-based exercises or protocol you have. If the patient doesn't understand what's happening, they will not get better."

On the most recent episode of HEADCHECK Health Talks, concussion expert Matt Campbell of Midwest Concussion Clinic discusses the importance of education in concussion recovery.

Introducing the rebuilt headcheckhealth.com with a new look and a new way to tell our story. ⚡

When we started HEADCHECK over a decade ago, we found that a concussion protocol is only as good as its ex*****on. Since then, we’ve built software that turns complex protocols into actionable systems, supporting the people on the front lines with the tools they need and organizations with the visibility they lack.

But our website was trying to speak to everyone at once, and in doing so, it didn't speak clearly enough to anyone.

So we stripped it down and rebuilt it around one core idea:

HEADCHECK is the Digital Foundation For Your Concussion Protocol.

Now, when you visit headcheckhealth.com you'll find three simple paths:

Home – Anchors our mission and the problem we solve: simplifying protocol ex*****on so every person has the right tool for their role and leadership can oversee it with ease.

Platform – A clear, end-to-end look at how HEADCHECK actually works, from simplifying testing to return‑to‑play coordination, and everything in between.

Enterprise – Our solution built for operations that need consistency at scale, auditable compliance, and data analysis to advance leading concussion safety programs.

Huge thanks to the 6,000+ organizations that trust us.

"Concussions are called invisible injuries for a reason."

On the latest episode of HEADCHECK Health Talks, we’re joined by Matt Campbell, concussion expert and owner of Midwest Concussion Clinic.

Matt breaks down how he conducts full concussion evaluations remotely and why recovery is far more complex than just resting in a dark room. He also discusses his multi-system treatment approach, the role of nutrition and supplements in brain healing, and why educating patients is just as important as treating them.

Most head contact in youth hockey may not come from rule violations.

A new video-based study (McFaul, Connor S et al., 2026) of youth bodychecking games found that ~68% of head contact events occurred during legal play, not penalties or obvious aggression.

This finding challenges a common assumption that illegal hits are the main driver of head contact. Instead, many events appear to arise from routine gameplay situations, including player positioning, speed, and bodychecking interactions.

Improving safety in youth hockey may therefore require broader prevention strategies, such as coaching on checking technique, awareness, and gameplay dynamics, alongside rule enforcement.

Understanding how and when head contact occurs is a key step toward designing better injury prevention strategies!

Hockey is an immensely popular sport in Canada, especially among youth participants. Despite evidence on the rates and risk of head injuries, especially in bodychecking contexts, little research has explored how and why injury occurs in gameplay ...

For school sports teams, concussion management is a team effort. Athletic trainers, physicians, coaches, administrators, and families all play a critical role in protecting student-athletes.

As Dr. James Stavitz of Kean University emphasizes, effective concussion care goes far beyond the field. It requires timely referrals, clearly enforced return-to-play protocols, open communication, and shared accountability.

New advancements in concussion care! 🧠 A global team of clinicians, researchers, and Para athletes has been working to launch the Para SCAT6-WC — an adapted concussion assessment tool for wheelchair-using athletes. Standard tests like balance and coordination often aren't feasible for wheelchair users, so this initiative redesigns evaluation to reflect different functional abilities.

At a 2025 summit, experts modified key test components and embedded clinician guidance for real-world use. Drafts are now in expert review, with clinical testing coming next.

Without adapted tools, Para athletes risk inequitable care despite facing similar concussion risks. Next steps include athlete panel validation in 2026 and real-world testing.

This is a major step toward more inclusive, evidence-based concussion care!

Do men and women recover differently from concussions? 🤔

A recent review (Arachchi, Shanika et al, 2026) analyzing 41 studies found consistent evidence that women often report stronger symptoms and longer recovery times after mild traumatic brain injury than their male counterparts. Brain imaging findings also suggest biological differences in how injuries affect male vs. female brains. Researchers highlight the need for more personalized, sex-specific approaches to concussion care and recovery.

🏉 As rugby continues to grow globally, concussion reporting remains a critical challenge.

New research highlights alarming rates of unrecognized and unreported concussions, particularly in community rugby where medical support is often limited.

In our latest blog post, Dr. Jennifer Hunnicutt dives into the research and explains why improving reporting systems and team culture may be the key to protecting player health.
