Wavefront Centre for Communication Accessibility

Wavefront Centre for Communication Accessibility Hearing healthcare and communication solutions for people who are Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing.

The Wavefront Centre for Communication Accessibility is passionate about creating a society in which Deaf, DeafBlind, Hard of Hearing and Hearing individuals can interact freely without barriers. For those with hearing loss and deafness, communication becomes challenging, affecting any sphere of daily life, from work to home to school and community. Wavefront Centre provides supportive programs and services that focus on the strengths and talents of Deaf, DeafBlind and Hard of Hearing individuals rather than barriers. Wavefront Centre works to create opportunities for individuals to gain employment, participate in communities, and increase social connectedness with family and friends. We also provide public education to increase awareness and understanding of topics related to Deaf, Deafblind and Hard of Hearing.

: Sharing stories and raising awareness

As part of our year-long celebration of Wavefront Centre’s 70th anniversary, we’re highlighting moments that helped grow awareness of communication accessibility in the community.

This photo from November 1975 shows a segment from Show of Hands, featuring Western Institute for the Deaf Executive Director Lynn Siddaway alongside Barry Fondrick and Bill Bain of the Kinsmen Foundation.

Conversations like these helped raise public awareness about accessibility and the importance of community support for people who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing, an effort that continues to shape progress today.

: Early communication technology in action

As part of our year-long celebration of Wavefront Centre’s 70th anniversary, we’re sharing photos and stories that highlight the people and innovations that shaped communication accessibility.

This photo from the 1970s shows a former staff person using a vintage teleprinter (teletypewriter), a machine that could send and receive typed messages over telegraph lines.

Technology like this helped pave the way for Telecommunications Devices for the Deaf (TTY), which later transformed communication access for Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities.

Do you remember using a teletype or TTY machine? We’d love to hear your stories—please like, comment, and share.

Today's hearing aid technology is:
- Smaller and more discreet
- Smarter and more adaptive
- Designed for real-world listening environments

But the technology is only as good as the care behind it.

At Wavefront Centre, expert fitting, follow-up, and education are part of every hearing aid journey.

“Audio accessibility isn’t just about technology, it’s about making sure everyone can fully experience and connect with live events,” says Wendy Wolfe.

At a recent community event at The Westdale in Hamilton, Ontario, we explored how tools like Bettear and Auracast™ are making that possible, streaming clear, high-quality sound directly to smartphones, hearing aids, and cochlear implants.

With support from The Slaight Family Foundation, Wavefront Centre is expanding this access to venues across Canada, helping more people feel included, engaged, and part of the moment.

Our Story

Wavefront Centre is unique because we are the only organization in B.C. that houses resources to assist with every aspect of a person’s life under one roof. These resources include audiology services, interpreting services, employment counselling services, job finding clubs, a job resource centre, a seniors outreach program, a communication devices showroom, informative classes, and community presentations. Wavefront Centre proudly believes in serving the community as a non-profit organization. This means that any money we earn from our social enterprises, such as our hearing aid clinic, goes back into the community to provide free programs. With nearly six decades of experience, Wavefront Centre serves almost 12,000 Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals every year. We have enjoyed a proven track record of success and thousands of clients who have benefited from our services. No other agency meets the needs of Deaf and Hard of Hearing British Columbians like we do.
