The Wavefront Centre for Communication Accessibility is passionate about creating a society in which Deaf, DeafBlind, Hard of Hearing and Hearing individuals can interact freely without barriers. For those with hearing loss and deafness, communication becomes challenging, affecting any sphere of daily life, from work to home to school and community. Wavefront Centre provides supportive programs an

d services that focus on the strengths and talents of Deaf, DeafBlind and Hard of Hearing individuals rather than barriers. Wavefront Centre works to create opportunities for individuals to gain employment, participate in communities, and increase social connectedness with family and friends. We also provide public education to increase awareness and understanding of topics related to Deaf, Deafblind and Hard of Hearing.

Accessible virtual communication doesn’t happen by accident.

Virtual sign language interpreting and captioning can improve access, reduce wait times, and remove geographic barriers. But only when the right conditions are in place reliable tech, clear audio/video, and qualified providers.

Communication access must be treated as essential infrastructure, not an add-on.

Wavefront Centre is proud to help move this work forward through research and real-world solutions.

: A milestone for community living

As part of our year-long celebration of Wavefront Centre’s 70th anniversary, we’re sharing moments that reflect the progress toward greater independence and inclusion.

This photo from c. 1979/1980 captures speakers and an interpreter connected to the first Deaf Group Home, an important step in creating supportive, community-based living spaces.

Moments like this highlight the collaboration and advocacy that helped expand opportunities and services for Deaf individuals.

And if you look closely, you can even spot the photographer reflected in the mirror behind the speakers, a small detail that captures the moment from another perspective.

: Sharing stories and raising awareness

As part of our year-long celebration of Wavefront Centre’s 70th anniversary, we’re highlighting moments that helped grow awareness of communication accessibility in the community.

This photo from November 1975 shows a segment from Show of Hands, featuring Western Institute for the Deaf Executive Director Lynn Siddaway alongside Barry Fondrick and Bill Bain of the Kinsmen Foundation.

Conversations like these helped raise public awareness about accessibility and the importance of community support for people who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing, an effort that continues to shape progress today.

Our Story

Wavefront Centre is unique because we are the only organization in B.C. that houses resources to assist with every aspect of a person’s life under one roof. These resources include audiology services, interpreting services, employment counselling services, job finding clubs, a job resource centre, a seniors outreach program, a communication devices showroom, informative classes, and community presentations. Wavefront Centre proudly believes in serving the community as a non-profit organization. This means that any money we earn from our social enterprises, such as our hearing aid clinic, goes back into the community to provide free programs. With nearly six decades of experience, Wavefront Centre serves almost 12,000 Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals every year. We have enjoyed a proven track record of success and thousands of clients who have benefited from our services. No other agency meets the needs of Deaf and Hard of Hearing British Columbians like we do.
