Deconstructing Personality Part 5: Behavioural and Social Cognitive Approaches to personality

(a) Behaviourist Account of Personality. According to behaviorists, personality is an expression of connections between behavior, rewards, and punishment.Behaviourists avoided terms like personality traits and dispositions, instead focusing on how past experiences impact future behavior. For example, whether or not someone is pessimistic may be influenced by prior experiences of feeling a lost sense of control.

(b) Reciprocal Determinism and the Social-Cognitive Approach. According to Albert Bandura and colleagues, personality is the result of dynamic interactions between behaviour and reinforcement, as well as the individual's beliefs, expectations, and dispositions.

Did you know: Personality remains relatively stable throughout our lifetime.

Consider this fundamental neuroscience perspective: "neurons that fire together, wire together." We know that the more people practice a skill, the more their brains are trained to be successful at that ability. Similarly, the more people practice being extraverted, open-minded, conscientious, agreeable, or neurotic, the more their brains are trained to function in those ways.

What personality traits have remained stable or have changed in your lifetime? let us know in the comments.

Deconstructing Personality part 3:

The Five Factor Model (AKA The Big Five) was developed by McCrae and Costa (1987); a trait-based theory of personality based on the finding that personality can be described using five primary dimensions; this model has become the most common trait-based approach for academic personality researchers, with hundreds of research articles citing it.

While scholars frequently differ on the precise names for each dimension, the following are most typically described:

•Openness
•Conscientiousness
•Extraversion
•Agreeableness
•Neuroticism

*You might find it helpful to use the acronym OCEAN.

Deconstructing Personality Part 2: Six Domains of Knowledge about Human Nature

A domain of knowledge is a subfield of research and study in which psychologists have concentrated their efforts on learning about certain aspects of human nature. The boundaries of a researcher's knowledge, expertise, and interests are defined by a domain of knowledge.

The field of personality can be simply divided into six separate domains of knowledge about human nature:

💡Dispositional domain: personality is influenced by traits the person is born with and develops over time;

💡Biological domain : by Biological events;

💡Intrapsychic domain: by processes within the person’s own mind;

💡Cognitive-experiential domain : by personal and private thoughts, feelings, desires, beliefs and other subjective experiences;

💡Social and Cultural domain: by social, cultural, and gendered positions in the world;

💡Adjustment domain: and by adjustments that the person must make to the inevitable changes of life.

In recent years, mindfulness has grown in popularity as a method of managing emotions and mental health on a global scale.

But did you know that the term "mindfulness" derives from the Pali terms sati, which means awareness, attention, or alertness in the Indian Buddhist tradition, and vipassana, which means insight gained through meditation.

Have you ever been asked to remember a long list of items? Or have you simply been handed a list of items to remember? If so, you may have noticed that the first and final things on the list are easier to remember, while the ones in the middle are fuzzy.

Your memory has been impacted by what researchers call the ‘serial position effect.'

The serial position effect describes how the order of information in a series affects human memory. It indicates that we recall the first and final items in a sequence the best and find it difficult to remember the middle ones.

Swipe through to learn about the two types of order effects and why they are important.

Check out our blog post (Link in bio) to learn more about the Serial Position Effect and read about supporting empirical evidence.

“There is no health without mental health.”

Mental health and physical health are deeply linked. There are several links between mental health and chronic physical conditions that have a substantial influence on people's quality of life, demand for health care and other publicly supported services, and societal consequences.

The World Health Organization clearly defines health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

Understanding the connections between mind and body is the first step in creating strategies to reduce the prevalence of co-occurring conditions and to help individuals who are currently suffering from mental illnesses and chronic physical conditions.
