Forward head posture (FHP) significantly alters cervical spine mechanics. Even a 2 cm forward shift increases the effective weight of the head on your spine, forcing the musculoskeletal system to compensate.
In Neutral Alignment, the cervical curve is balanced, distributing load evenly across discs and joints with minimal muscular effort.
In Forward Head Posture:
Upper Cervical Spine -- Shifts into extension.
Lower Cervical Spine -- Shifts into flexion.
Result: Dramatically increased compressive forces and joint stress.
This disrupts the length-tension relationship of the neck and shoulder musculature, creating a cycle of weakness and overactivity.
Stretched & Weakened Muscles:
The deep stabilizers often become elongated and inhibited, specifically the anterior scalenes, sternocleidomastoid (in certain patterns), and posterior cervical muscles.
Overactive & Shortened Muscles:
To counteract the forward pull, the suboccipitals, levator scapulae, and erector spinae often become chronically contracted.
This imbalance is more than cosmetic; it often leads to:
Tension headaches and chronic neck pain.
Reduced breathing efficiency and TMJ discomfort.
Altered scapular mechanics and shoulder tightness.
Recovery requires restoring thoracic mobility as well as cervical spine alignment, activating deep neck flexors, and retraining scapular stability to return the spine to a neutral, efficient state. Your chiropractor can help. Don't have one yet? Now you know one to call.
