Did you know typing is an important fine motor and visual-motor skill that Occupational Therapists (OTs) can help develop? Typing requires 👇

🧠 Motor planning: knowing which fingers to use and when
✋ Fine motor strength and dexterity: isolating finger movements
👀 Visual-motor coordination: tracking the screen and keyboard at the same time
⏱️ Attention and endurance: maintaining posture and focus

For some children, typing can feel frustrating or tiring — especially if they struggle with hand strength, coordination, or self-regulation.

OTs help break typing down into manageable steps, using fun, engaging activities that target the underlying skills, like:

🎯 Strengthening the hands and fingers
🎯 Building finger awareness and coordination
🎯 Practising posture and positioning
🎯 Supporting focus and pacing through sensory and self-regulation tools

Typing is not just a school skill — it’s a life skill that supports independence, confidence and participation.

SickKids researchers are committed to advancing evidence-based understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Recently, the U.S. government made several claims regarding Autism, including a suggested link between acetaminophen use during pregnancy and Autism. These statements were made without presenting new scientific evidence and have caused confusion and concern among families, health-care providers and researchers.

"Science must guide our understanding of Autism, not myths or misinformation," says Dr. Steve Scherer, Chief of Research and Senior Scientist, Genetics & Genome Biology at SickKids.
