Sleep and Injury Prevention 😴
 
Often times SLEEP is left out of the conversation when speaking about injury prevention due to the more popular topics like prehab exercise and nutrition 💤
 
Understanding the importance of sleep can allow for athletes and active individuals to recover faster and perform at a higher level. 
 
The graph above was extracted from a paper from 2014 which looked into the impact of sleep deprivation on injury rates in athletes.  An athlete who spends less then 8 hours sleeping per night were 1.7x more likely to have had an injury compared to those who slept greater than 8 hours.

🏃🏽‍♂️Contrary to what many believe running is actually safe for your knees.

A study completed in 2018 showed that marathon runners actually were less prevalent to suffer from arthritis compared to the general population.

Our knees are adaptable like any other tissue in the body, ensure you take a slow approach to introducing a running routine by spacing your runs out 2-4 days apart.

🚴🏻‍♂️🚴‍♀️For All my hard core cyclists out there, time to pop the bike on an indoor trainer and enter the world of Zwift or whatever virtual world you use. The amazing cycling specific training that can be completed on an indoor trainer is very impressive but comes with a cost.

During cycling, various positions are used to achieve proper aerodynamics to increase speed and efficiency, generally speaking the spine is ALWAYS in some degree of lumbar flexion. A flexed posture is no different than one adopted by an office worker which puts you at a significantly higher risk for developing Low back pain.

Patients often come in seeking care and recommendations related to cycling and low back pain, my plan of action follows this sequence to relieving your pain and increasing your time on the saddle pain-free.

⏩Consider the body as a whole instead of isolated muscles and joints, the body works in an alternating pattern of stable joints connected by mobile joints. When this pattern is altered, dysfunction and compensation will occur.

Chronic nagging issues in one area of the body are sometimes the result of dysfunctions in unrelated joints ⚙️
