After many years as a competitive swimmer and coach, Jo-Ann focused her attention on becoming an A.C.E. She is a registered member of The Canadian Association of Fitness Professionals, The Pilates Method Alliance, a seminar presenter and a BCRPA Trainer of Fitness Leaders. She was also a founding member of The Canadian Pilates Association and held a

position on their Board Of Directors till 2006. During this time she also pursued a certificate in Thai Massage and became a Registered Natural Health Practitioner. Her Pilates education includes an intensive eight month apprenticeship-training program following The Polestar Education Pilates curriculum in Reformer, Wall Unit, High-Low Chair and Mat as well as completion of the widely recognized Stott Pilates Conditioning Program (Level 2). She has also recently graduated from the Master’s Program offered by the world renowned Pilates Center in Boulder Colorado – considered by many to offer the most rigorous, comprehensive and respected training programs in the world. She continues to expand her knowledge of anatomy and movement by incorporating other modalities of body work. She has been involved in the Pilates community in BC since 1998 after a car accident left her with injuries that were not healing from traditional methods of rehabilitation. It was at that time she realized the powerful connection between mind and body to heal itself. Her first experience with teaching this method was at Delta Orthopedic and Physiotherapy under the guidance of Diane Lee and Karen Angelucci . She then went on to teach at The Canadian Pilates Institute. This experience along with modern scientific gains and insight into how the body moves helped her realize that Pilates is an ever growing and evolving system with a deep respect for its traditional roots. It is from this perspective that Jo-Ann’s goal is to inspire others to work towards the same profound changes she herself experienced through the Pilates Method of Body Conditioning.

Uniform development (the reason why we practice Pilates) is often best illustrated in Stomach Massage Round.

If you use your quads to push the carriage out and in, you are bypassing the abs, hamstrings, glutes and inner thighs.

Therefore the purpose of the exercise, to uniformly develop the body, gets lost because the already dominant muscle group takes over the movement.
