The Neurodiversity Family Centre

The Neurodiversity Family Centre An inclusive centre providing Neurodiversity affirming counselling to children, teens, couples & adults.

Although each practitioner uses their own unique set of skills and therapy styles, as a centre, we believe in collaborative problem solving approach by Dr. Ross Greene and the family connections approach by Dr. Allison Reese. Our center offers support for children, youth and families in order to provide education, build connections, and foster success. We offer services for Neurodivergent youth as well as their siblings, parents and educators. Currently our services focus on youth with ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder and Oppositional Defiant Disorder. However, we are working towards offering services for twice exceptional youth, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and more.

🌈 Communicating with your Neurodivergent Child 🌈
Sometimes, even the kindest requests like “Please put your shoes on” can sound like a demand to the neurodivergent mind. What feels like a simple ask may feel overwhelming or triggering to them, especially when dopamine levels are low.
That’s where Low Demand Communication comes in. By shifting from giving directions to using declarative language—describing, noticing, or sharing information—we can invite cooperation without pressure.

✨ For example:
Instead of “Please put your shoes on,” try “I noticed your shoes are still by the door.”

This approach helps:
💜 Reduce stress and power struggles
💜 Prime your child to make their own healthy choices
💜 Support autonomy and independence
💜 Foster connection instead of resistance

Every child deserves to feel safe and respected. By adjusting our language, we give them the chance to make their own decisions, instead of forcing compliance.

🌟 The best part? They can take all the credit for making healthy choices! This is the perfect time to congratulate your kiddo on managing their morning routine, or whatever the task at hand is!
