Reclaim Your Strength: The Empowering Role of Exercise in Your Cancer Journey 💖

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and we want to remind you of a powerful tool available at every stage of your journey: EXERCISE! Research overwhelmingly shows that physical activity is safe, beneficial, and a vital component of modern cancer care. By staying active, you take a proactive role in your health, improving both your body and your outlook from diagnosis, through treatment, and into recovery.

Battling Side Effects with Movement and Water 💧

Regular physical activity is an incredible ally during active treatment, helping you navigate challenging side effects. Moving more actually gives you more energy, making exercise one of the most effective ways to manage cancer-related fatigue! It also helps ease nausea and pain while providing a significant boost to your mental health by reducing anxiety and depression.

When traditional exercise feels too strenuous, Hydrotherapy (exercising in warm water) offers tremendous healing benefits.

Key Aquatic Advantages:
🩵Low-Impact Support: Water's buoyancy reduces stress on joints, making movement easier.
🩵Swelling Reduction: The hydrostatic pressure helps reduce swelling and improve lymphatic flow, assisting in the management of lymphedema after breast cancer surgery.
🩵Bone Metastasis: Pool therapy can be suitable for bone metastasis (when cancer progresses) offering a safe exercise option.
🩵Warmest Pool: We offer hydrotherapy sessions at the Esquimalt Rec Center, home to Victoria's warmest lap pool!

Building Back to Work and Play 💪

As you complete treatment, exercise shifts its focus toward a strong and confident recovery. Physical activity is key to rebuilding lost strength, improving cardiovascular health, and regaining the functional fitness needed to comfortably return to your regular life, including work, hobbies, and family activities. Importantly, studies suggest that maintaining an active lifestyle after treatment can also help lower the risk of some cancers returning and contribute to longer survival.

Your Partner in Recovery 🫂

Ready to harness the benefits of exercise but unsure where to begin? You don't have to navigate this journey alone. A Cancer Rehabilitation Physiotherapist will create a safe, tailored exercise program that accounts for your specific diagnosis, treatment side effects, and personal goals. Any cancer related conditions such as cancer related fatigue, radiation fibrosis, chording and/or frozen shoulder can be diagnosed by a cancer physiotherapist, and the appropriate exercise program can then be prescribed.

This October, we encourage you to explore personalized support. Take the first step toward reclaiming your strength and vitality by booking an assessment with our very own cancer physio, Nadine Stunzi!

Hydrotherapy, also known as aquatic therapy, water rehab, or pool therapy, is any rehabilitation exercise performed using water. The word literally translates as water therapy, so in some cases it has also been used to describe therapeutic processes where water is consumed or inserted into the body....

Meet the Owners

Mark and Beth are friends who decided to team up to build a different Physiotherapy Clinic that provides a healthy, fun and collaborative work environment for its team, while providing exceptional rehabilitation care.

The Lab Health Team all met under the roof of the Esquimalt Rec Centre 4 years ago now they get to work along side each other everyday. Our new space allows us to collaborate with each other while we use the pool, fitness centre and clinic private rooms to provide a healthcare approach that is multi-faceted.

We are so lucky to get to work with a hand selected team of registered Massage Therapists, Kinesiologists, Acupuncturist, certified Athletic Therapist and Physical Therapists.

We run a unique reception model that allows our receptionist to work from home. So you will find an iPad kiosk to greet you and help you book in for your appointment. But you can always talk to her by calling 250 386 7254.
