Did you know deer have a superpower?

They can eat poisonous plants that would harm humans—like poison oak and devil’s club.

With a much higher toxin tolerance than people and with some unique evolutionary traits, deer can treat the forest like a giant buffet without fear.

B.C. looks green and forested, but the reality is more complicated.

New scientific mapping shows how little old-growth forest remains as of 2025. Most red on this map represents logged forests. The tiny dark-green patches are the most at-risk old growth: highly productive forests with large, ancient trees.

Since 2021, the equivalent of 100 soccer fields of old growth have been logged every day in B.C. In just four years, that’s 714,000 soccer fields lost — more than 32× the size of Vancouver.

Old-growth forests protect clean water, biodiversity, climate stability, and long-term jobs. Only a tiny fraction remains.

Sea lions are a familiar sight along our coasts, but many people don’t realize just how social they are. These highly group-oriented animals often gather together during the winter months in groups called rafts, floating closely on the water to stay warm and protect themselves from predators like orca whales.

You might notice a flipper or two sticking up from the surface – this isn’t random behavior. Watch the video to learn how sea lions use their flippers to thermoregulate, which helps them adjust their body temperature as conditions change.

Animals like sea lions and the ecosystems they rely on are vulnerable to oil spills and other pollutants in our waterways.

Will your children be able to experience old-growth forests? Only a fraction of at-risk old-growth forests in B.C. remain standing.

As Shelley Luce, our Associate Director & Campaigns Director shares in this video, old-growth ecosystems are beautifully complex. We hope to keep them intact for future generations.

Join the movement to protect old-growth forests 🌲 All donations will be matched thanks to the Chan Family Foundation until midnight December 31st.

B.C. promised to pause logging to protect endangered old-growth forests—but new science shows logging rushed in instead. 🌲

Old growth recommended for protection was logged 4× more often, with reports showing 77,000 soccer fields of irreplaceable forest clearcut in just four years.

These forests are vital for clean water, wildlife, culture, and communities—and there’s still time to protect what remains.

Join thousands calling on the B.C. government to keep their promise and protect old growth. It takes 60 seconds: https://sierraclub.bc.ca/send-a-letter-for-old-growth-forests/

A massive yellow cedar – well above B.C.’s legal protection threshold – was still cut down, even as our independent report shows these ancient giants are disappearing at a dangerous pace. In Closer to the Brink, two forest scientists documented how B.C.’s biggest and oldest trees, the backbone of fragile old-growth ecosystems, continue to be logged at alarming rates.

These researchers found that logging was four times more likely to occur in areas with the most endangered forests that were recommended for logging deferrals than in other old growth. When logging overrides legal big-tree protections and scientific evidence, the system is failing. We’re calling again for the protection of the last old-growth forests and a transition to sustainable second-growth forestry
