We’re deeply concerned about the provincial government’s decision to quietly dismantle its Climate Action Secretariat—with some staff reassigned to support new fossil fuel infrastructure, as was reported yesterday by The Tyee. This erodes our government’s ability to work across ministries on climate solutions that improve our everyday lives, from affordable clean energy to heat pumps and EV infrastructure at a time when gas prices are spiking and climate emergencies are increasing.

As our Senior Policy & Science Advisor Jens Wieting puts it: “What we are seeing right now from this BC NDP government is unprecedented and dangerous: cancelling climate policies without replacing them, and dismantling the very capacity needed to design and implement solutions.”

Beneath every forest lies a hidden network: alive, connected, and constantly communicating 🌲

Through underground fungal networks, trees share nutrients, send warnings, and care for one another. Mother trees help young seedlings survive, and even different species cooperate. Forests aren’t just collections of trees – they are living communities.

When old growth is lost, we lose centuries of this connection, resilience, and communities. And despite promises to protect them, the equivalent of 100 soccer fields of irreplaceable old growth is logged every day in B.C.

B.C.’s 2021 old growth advisory panel is sounding the alarm. In a new letter to Premier David Eby, all five experts warn the province is failing to protect these forests.

Logging continues in some of the most at-risk ecosystems while real protections are delayed. These forests are irreplaceable, and once they’re gone, they’re gone for good.

As the document outlines: “Purposely causing extinction is not just a moral failure but also a high economic, ecological and social risk.”

Old-growth forests are vital for climate stability, biodiversity, and Indigenous stewardship. We can’t afford more half measures and delays in protection.

Join Sierra Club BC for an important panel discussion on the growing threat of tanker traffic and fossil fuel expansion — and what it means for our environment, coastal communities, and iconic orca populations.

Hear from powerful voices on the frontlines, including Rueben George (Tsleil-Waututh Nation) on protecting Southern Resident Orcas and fragile marine ecosystems, Karen Wristen (Living Oceans Society) on oil spill risks and coastal preparedness, and Shelley Luce (Sierra Club BC) on why increasing oil exports isn’t in the best interest of our communities or economy.

This conversation will unpack the real impacts — and what’s at stake for B.C.’s coast if we don’t change course.

Register now and be part of the movement to protect our coast:

Mining exploration has been approved in the Tranquil Creek watershed near Tofino — on unceded Tla-o-qui-aht territory in Clayoquot Sound — without the Nation’s consent. The area lies within Tla-o-qui-aht Tribal Parks, where mining has long been declared off-limits.

These permits undermine the tireless work of generations who have defended rainforests, clean water and salmon to support prosperity without industrial exploitation. British Columbia has made far-reaching commitments to uphold the rights of Indigenous Peoples, protect the environment, and modernize land-use planning in ways that support both, and decisions like this erode those commitments. The province needs to change course, starting in Clayoquot Sound.

We stand with Tla-o-qui-aht in calling for these permits to be rescinded.

Six years ago, BC made history by passing the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (DRIPA) and committing to implement the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) in partnership with First Nations. Now, the BC government is taking steps to undermine this commitment through amendments to the act. We stand with Indigenous peoples in BC and call on Premier David Eby and the BC government to recommit to meaningful implementation of UNDRIP instead of amending DRIPA.

As Indigenous scholar Judith Sayers, Cloy-e-iis, from the Hupacasath First Nation says: “It would be a huge step backwards for the province to amend DRIPA.…In six short years, and especially in the past six months, BC has gone from leading the world in addressing historic and ongoing harms to Indigenous Peoples to giving in to misinformation that is feeding an anti-Indigenous frenzy.”

Human rights, reconciliation, climate resilience, and shared prosperity are not competing goals — they are inseparable.

Can you imagine BC without ancient forests? 🌲

Old growth forests are the foundation of life here — home to salmon, bears, eagles, and towering cedars. They give us clean air, fresh water, help fight climate change, and are culturally important for First Nations.

But only a fraction still stands — and most is open to logging.

Let’s protect these giants for our communities and future generations.
