So much is happening, it’s easy to miss what really matters 🌲

Here are a few B.C. forest stories you might’ve missed — including why old growth is still being logged, what our new ‘Closer to the Brink’ report reveals, and where hope is growing despite government stalling.

The good news? Communities, First Nations, and local governments are stepping up for old growth.

Stay informed, follow Sierra Club BC, and share this video to keep forest protection in the spotlight.

The latest B.C. forestry report acknowledges a crisis—but falls short on the urgent, concrete action needed to stop old-growth logging, protect biodiversity, and support communities and workers. It’s time to move from words to change on the ground.

As Shelley Luce, Associate Director and Campaigns Director says: “B.C. does not need another vision document. It needs the political will to act on the science, honour its commitments, and protect the forests that communities and future generations depend on.”

Did you know some plants in North America eat animals? 👀🌱

One of the most mysterious ecosystems in B.C.—bogs and wetlands—are home to carnivorous plants like the round-leaved sundew sundew. Hidden among the moss, it lures insects in with sparkling “dew,” then traps and digests them.

Want to see how it works and learn how to draw these incredible plants? Join our FREE Carnivorous Bog Plant webinar to discover just how unique these species are and learn to illustrate them yourself.

Climate change is hurting our health, our economy and our communities. Right here, right now. Regardless of your beliefs, background or where you live, we are all being impacted. That's why Sierra Club BC has joined over 600 groups — including healthcare workers, businesses and agricultural organizations — calling on the B.C. government to implement 10 urgent actions that can help address the climate emergency. Together, our groups represent 2.2 million people across the province.

The 10 actions that can help protect the people and places we love are outlined in a recent Annual Progress Report released by the BC Climate Emergency Campaign, which our Senior Policy and Science Advisor Jens Wieting contributed to. You can read the report's findings here:
https://bcclimateemergency.ca/progress-report

As Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, Union of BC Indian Chiefs points out in the report's media release: "The time for a strong stance on climate change will always be now, we owe it to our children, grandchildren, and all future generations." If we act together, we can build a brighter future.

Did you know deer have a superpower?

They can eat poisonous plants that would harm humans—like poison oak and devil’s club.

With a much higher toxin tolerance than people and with some unique evolutionary traits, deer can treat the forest like a giant buffet without fear.

B.C. looks green and forested, but the reality is more complicated.

New scientific mapping shows how little old-growth forest remains as of 2025. Most red on this map represents logged forests. The tiny dark-green patches are the most at-risk old growth: highly productive forests with large, ancient trees.

Since 2021, the equivalent of 100 soccer fields of old growth have been logged every day in B.C. In just four years, that’s 714,000 soccer fields lost — more than 32× the size of Vancouver.

Old-growth forests protect clean water, biodiversity, climate stability, and long-term jobs. Only a tiny fraction remains.

Sea lions are a familiar sight along our coasts, but many people don’t realize just how social they are. These highly group-oriented animals often gather together during the winter months in groups called rafts, floating closely on the water to stay warm and protect themselves from predators like orca whales.

You might notice a flipper or two sticking up from the surface – this isn’t random behavior. Watch the video to learn how sea lions use their flippers to thermoregulate, which helps them adjust their body temperature as conditions change.

Animals like sea lions and the ecosystems they rely on are vulnerable to oil spills and other pollutants in our waterways.
