A great article from The Narwhal highlighting our new report about the state of forests in B.C. 🌲

This latest data shows that industrial logging and stalled conservation progress have pushed old-growth & primary forests close to the brink. For the sake of forests and our economy, B.C. must protect the last old growth & transition to sustainable forestry.

A new independent report found that, despite provincial commitments to protect old growth and change course in forest stewardship, endangered forests in B.C. are now even closer to the brink. In the last four years, logging in at-risk old-growth forests recommended for logging deferrals in 2021 was four times more likely than in other old growth. Only a small amount of big-treed old forests remain.

Business-as-usual is unconscionable. Keeping endangered forests standing is indispensable to sustain species habitat, First Nations values, carbon sinks and a diverse economy. Old growth is worth more standing.

Thank you to Coastal First Nations and Premier Eby for holding the line on the North Coast oil tanker ban 👏

The Oil Tanker Moratorium Act protects diverse ecosystems, important cultural sites, and thousands of local jobs and businesses.

Leaders from Coastal First Nations joined BC Premier David Eby to announce a joint declaration to keep oil tankers out of coastal waters.

The federal oil tanker ban protects marine ecosystems and thousands of local jobs and businesses. It also guarantees that no oil pipelines can be built to B.C.’s North Coast. Now, this legislation finds itself front and centre with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith pushing for a new oil pipeline to B.C.’s North Coast

Join us for a free webinar where we will challenge the business case of a North Coast pipeline.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith’s desire to demolish the north coast oil tanker ban in B.C. could cost taxpayers over $9 billion and destroy over 4,000 jobs. But there’s something you can do about it.

Another old-growth forest recommended for deferral was logged on Vancouver Island. Our Senior Policy & Science Advisor, Jens Wieting, was interviewed by Global on this breaking news.

Thanks to Joshua Wright for the heartbreaking work documenting another devastating example of old-growth clearcutting. Today, more than half of the most at-risk old-growth forests (a small 5% fraction of forest area in B.C.) remain open for logging. Progress has stalled in protecting the last of these ancient ecosystems, despite conservation funding announced in 2023.

The province must urgently offer funding for First Nations to support interim solutions and take the financial pressure off that has led to the logging of the last stands.

We must fast-track solutions, not destruction. Send a message for old growth 🌲: https://sierraclub.bc.ca/send-a-letter-for-old-growth-forests/

We took out an ad in the Vancouver Sun to send a clear message to Parliament Hill and the press: B.C. will not stop defending the North Coast Tanker Ban (aka the piece of legislation keeping the Great Bear Sea safe from oil spills and the economic devastation that comes with them).

Thanks to our supporters who helped get more media coverage on this issue!

Mark your calendars! Join us on November 5 to learn how to draw rattlesnakes ✏️📅

This snake thrives in rocky outcrops in the Interior valleys of British Columbia. Despite popular belief, these rattlesnakes are not aggressive. In this Learn to Draw session, we'll bust other common misconceptions and share stories about why this threatened species is so awesome!

We are happy to report that our resolution calling for cooling green infrastructure was endorsed by the Union of BC Municipalities! We advanced this resolution with our Move the Dial at City Council program.

Thanks to the local leaders across the province who helped make this win possible! Together, we’re building momentum to protect people across B.C. from extreme heat, the deadliest climate impact we face. More than 600 British Columbians lost their lives during the 2021 heat dome. The coroner’s review was clear: neighbourhoods without trees and greenspace were the deadliest.

This is not about trees vs. housing — we need both! This resolution sent a clear message to the Province that BC communities need green infrastructure to keep people safe.

"As the rights and titleholders of B.C. North and Central Coast and Haida Gwaii, we must inform Premier Smith once again that there is no support from coastal First Nations for a pipeline and an oil tankers project in our coastal waters," Marilyn Slett, chief councillor of the Heiltsuk Tribal Council and president of the Coastal First Nations-Great Bear Initiative, said Wednesday.

First Nations fought for decades to get the federal moratorium that keeps oil tankers out of their waters. Sierra Club BC is standing with Coastal First Nations.
