Think twice before using makeup testers on your eyes. What looks harmless could actually put your eye health at risk.
đź’„Shared Products = Shared Bacteria
Store testers are used by many people, which means bacteria and viruses can easily spread from one person to another. Eye products like mascara and eyeliner are especially risky because they come into direct contact with delicate areas.
đź’„Risk of Eye Infections
Using contaminated testers can lead to eye infections such as conjunctivitis, or “pink eye.” Even mild redness, swelling, or irritation can be a sign of bacteria — and can worsen existing dry eye symptoms.
đź’„Viruses and Long-Term Risks
Viruses like herpes simplex can survive on shared products and spread through contact. In some cases, these infections can be long-lasting and even affect your vision.
đź’„Makeup Hygiene Matters
If you want to try a product, test it on your hand instead of near your eyes. Ask for single-use applicators whenever possible, and remember to replace your own eye makeup every 3–6 months to avoid contamination.
