***Bylaw Officer Protective Force Options- Kelowna, BC***
Thank you to Kelowna Bylaw for hosting this training and for welcoming the attendance of Vernon and Peachland!
Although it was not ideal that the AC broke down at the start of day 1 with 32+ degree heat, this crew battled through it like champs.
Day 3 included Reality Based Training Scenarios, a favourite for participants. The conversation amongst officers combined with working through problems as a group to find creative ways to solve a problem is valuable, in particular for new team members or those new to the City.
Based on the feedback, I’d say the course was a success. Thanks for being awesome, folks! Keep fighting the good fight and stay safe out there.

I feel extremely lucky to be able to deliver training to the folks who help keep my hometown safe.

A wise person once said to me “I’d rather learn a skill I’ll never have to use than need a skill I’ve never learned”.

Walk and Talk with confidence, competence, kindness, empathy, and compassion and the liklihood of ever having to use these skills decreases.

BUT if Violence presents itself… remember- your family wants you home; physically and
emotionally. No door knocks.

Take care of yourselves AND take care of each other.

***Bylaw Officer Protective Force Options***

This week was the perfect training to wrap up the year with our final Bylaw Course of 2024.

I was tasked to create a 2 day lesson for the fine folks in Kelowna- “Kris, we need something that covers personal safety…we need to cover edged weapons…we need to cover dealing with a group of aggressive people (including the possibility of being swarmed)…and most importantly… we need some quality team bonding amongst the staff”. Of course, my eyes lit up! Yes! Yes! Yes! Let’s do it!

2 groups, 2 days each… and it was a blast! By the end of each day- these folks were exhausted, mentally and physically. A bit beat up and bruised (by each other, not me) but based on their performance, feedback, and their faces, everyone went home feeling confident, competent, and smiling ear to ear. I’ll take that as a success! Although we hope they will never have to use these skills, in the case they are spontaneously assaulted they will at least have a foundation of how to respond.

Love what you do, and it will never feel like work!

Kelowna, always a pleasure spending some quality time with you folks. Thank you once again for trusting in Sheepdog to help you get home safe.

***Speed Cuffing***

So Chris is instructing in Penticton. I’m instructing in Nanaimo. During a lesson my phone lights up… from Chris!

Chris texts me a picture of him and a student with the text “speed cuff champ”, “pouch to click click”.

Well of course my competitive side comes out and I quickly challenge my class to beat Penticton’s time. Although it couldn’t be done (4:29 is pretty quick) I couldn’t help but feel a little warm inside.

What some of you may/ may not know- Chris was a fi****ms instructor his whole career, an ERT dude! He developed a solid skill set on how to communicate/ de-escalate conflict in his years as a beat cop, working in professional standards, and liaising with community partners in ops planning. His ability to present comes from his ability to connect with people, as an instructor and as a person. Don’t let that 💪 physique and bald head fool you- he’s a total softy. But let’s face it…Control Tactics wasn’t his shtick. And here he is… after several years working with Sheepdog, lots of co-teaching (with a pain in the @$$ lead), and a few (important) courses under his belt and by golly- he’s teaching folks how to handcuff in under 5 seconds!!!

Who knew- Maybe you can teach an old dog new tricks 😘
