Health is so much more than the absence of illness.
WHO (the World Health Organization) says it is 'a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being' and that true health encompasses vitality, resilience, and quality of life.
And our good health is influenced by what we do day to day.
Habits drive about 40% of what people do every single day.
Because of that, they have the power to transform our health, our energy, and ultimately our entire lives.
If those habits - those automatically repeated actions - aren't moving us forward or aren’t aligned with where we want to go, then it's time to change them.
Habits are like programming.
And just like any programming, rewriting the code requires intention and consistency.
While habits may currently be running the show, we can change the script by adding in simple strategies no matter our fitness level or schedule.
Healthy strategies like -
HYDRATING WITHIN 30 MINUTES OF WAKING
•Drinking water first thing in the morning jumpstart our metabolism and rehydrates our cells.
MOVING FOR A MINIMUM OF 30 MINUTES
•Physical activity increases blood flow, delivering oxygen and nutrients throughout the body and trigging the release of those feel-good endorphins (...may I suggest Jazzercise?!)
EATING PROTEIN AT EACH MEAL
•It helps stabilizes blood sugar levels, prevents energy crashes, and helps maintain muscle tissue (...and remember your fibre too.)
TAKING STRATEGIC BREAKS EVERY 90 MINUTES
•Your brain needs rest- so stand up, stretch, or take a quick walk to maintain peak cognitive performance.
LIMITING EVENING SCREEN TIME
•It has been proven to negatively impact sleep quality, and sleep is where we heal, recover, and improve.
GRABBING 15 MINUTES OF MORNING (SUN)LIGHT
•Early morning light exposure (when possible) boosts serotonin production which improves alertness during the day and sleep quality at night.
DEEP BREATHING THROUGHOUT THE DAY
•When life gets busy, we may find ourselves breathing shallowly which limits oxygen intake and triggers stress responses in our bodies. Take a moment or two to reset by slowing things down - inhale for four counts, hold for four, and exhale for four and repeat.
The good news?
We are the ones holding the pen, and we are not stuck.
We can choose better patterns.
We can build stronger routines.
There is no need to overhaul our entire lives overnight - real transformation happens in deliberate steps.
Step by step, choice by choice, we can create the habits that build the life we truly want to live.
We got this!
40% of our day? Habit.
We change our habits - we change our lives.
