Victoria Disability Resource Centre

Victoria Disability Resource Centre The VDRC is a grassroots non-profit organization run by and for persons with disabilities. Promoting a new perspective on disability!

12/05/2025

At the Victoria Disability Resource Centre, we believe that stories about people with disabilities must reflect accuracy, dignity, and lived experience.

We appreciate the thoughtful context shared by Disability Alliance BC (DABC) in response to the recent Global News segment. Their statement highlights the complexity of British Columbia’s social assistance system and the realities faced by people who rely on it.

As a non-profit that supports individuals with disabilities every day, we see firsthand the challenges that come with navigating these processes. We also know how important it is that public conversations around disability and income support are fair, balanced, and grounded in fact.

We encourage our community to read DABC’s full statement below and to stay informed about the experiences of people with disabilities in our province.

✨ New Accessible Feature at the VDRC! ✨

We LOVE when creative minds think about accessibility — and even more when they do something about it!

Recently, a local youth approached us with a brilliant idea:
👉 What if public washrooms had Braille maps so people who are blind or partially sighted didn’t have to feel their way around an unfamiliar bathroom just to get what they need?

Genius, right?!

He didn’t stop at the idea — he built a prototype and, with help from members of the blind community, refined it into a final product. And now…

🎉 The VDRC is proudly displaying these new Braille washroom maps on both of our washroom doors! 🎉

What we love most:
🟣 It helps both blind and sighted users (there’s written text too!)
🟣 It doesn’t take up much space — just one sign does the job
🟣 It’s a small change that makes a big difference in accessibility

We're so impressed by this youth’s creativity, dedication, and heart. 💜

If you’d like to connect with the creator or learn more about the project, just send us a message — we’ll happily put you in touch!
