Conditions of the present day are not what they use to be. Certain conditions are becoming less and less responsive to treatment and require higher levels of investigation.

We are even seeing an emergence of conditions that were not diagnosed until the last decade.

Given the complexity and change, treatment requires more thorough testing to understand what exactly is going on at a cellular level.

Two functional tests that I believe are beneficial for everyone are:
1. Comprehensive Gut Microbiome Testing
2. Organic Acid Testing

Gut Testing:
You don't need to have "digestive" symptoms to run this test. This is to assess the status of your microbiome, which everyone has and we now understand can be linked to nearly every disease.you should consider this especially if you have low energy, mood related symptoms, brain fog, sleep disorders etc.

Organic Acid Testing:
Assess your metabolic/mitochondrial function, neurotransmitters (brain), detox pathways and gastrointestinal health.

These two tests are a great start for an overall picture. But based on your individual presentation and concers addition testing that is useful includes:
✨️Thyroid Panel
✨️Vitamin D status
✨️Mycotoxin testing
✨️Comprehensive hormonal testing

It all depends on your picture and what test is most relevant.

Over-productivity and stress have been so long standing that many have lost touch with their most natural state of being -- RELAXATION.

Your nervous system doesn't want to be under stress, it has just been trained to operate from that pathway due to years of unaddressed & compounding stressors.

Regulating your nervous system is a personalized approach that can be catered to fit your lifestyle and personality. It's not a one-size fits all. As a starting point you can implement the following:

• Find out what relaxes YOU personally
• Implement scheduled rest days
• Create a daily ritual with mini practices that return you to a restful state
• Reframe your beliefs ie. you don’t have to earn rest
• Create time and safety to explore the feelings that you have been avoiding
• Prioritize the basics
• Get clear on your needs & honour them
• Reassess your personal expectations
• Set nourishing boundaries with yourself & with others
• Embrace your emotions don't fear them
• Recognize if you are a highly sensitive individual & nurture this
• Find out what practices work for you

I recently taught a workshop on Nervous System Regulation to a beautiful group of individuals & would love to share this with those of you who may be interested. Let me know...

Heavy menstrual bleeding can have a few different underlying causes. This is because the hormones that notmally communicate with one another all come from different organs.

If one hormone is imbalanced it is often a result of a downstream effect that impacts this chain of communication.

The most common structural causes of heavy menstrual flow are often fibroids & polyps.

The most common hormonal causes are often an imbalance between estrogen and progesterone that can be a result of PCOS or thyroid conditions.

If you are experiencing heavy me**es here are some signs that warrant further investigation:

• A menstrual cycle that impacts your work, social life or quality of life
• Soaking through a pad or tampon every 1 to 2 hours
• Using a tampon + a pad for extra security
• Abnormal clots; larger than a quarter
• Bleeding longer than 7 days
• Feeling tired, dizzy or having chronically low iron
• Severe pain with clots

To address this you need to:

Step 1:
Figure out with system(s) are impacted

Step 2:
Address the organ(s) involved and improve the chain of communication

Step 3:
Nourish the body so that it can return to balance & homeostasis

The point of this post is to:

✨️Empower you to make mindful and personalized decisions when it comes to your health. This happens by learning to listen to your body and seeking personalized healthcare.

And to remind you that:

✨️The Food Pyramid created in 1992 was only changed to MyPlate in 2011 after years of criticism. The vilifying of dietary fats in the 1970s-1990s was also another movement that was severely flawed.

✨️Focus on fueling your body in a way that feels nourishing and right for you.

✨️You are not what you EAT you are what you ABSORB! Most people have sub-optimal digestive function due to years of infections, stress, antibiotic use & poor nutrition. So they have an extremely hard time breaking down protein.

✨️QUALITY & quantity of protein both matter and should be based on your genetic predispositions.

✨️Some of the world’s healthiest cultures consume low levels of animal protein.

✨️Protein doesn't just come from animal sources.

✨️Every person has a different protein requirement. You can calculate your individual suggested requirement based on your body mass, activity level and goals. There is no one size fits all.

✨️Every macromolecule (protein, carb, fat) is required for the body to function optimally. The most optimal amount for your body depends on your constitution.

Traditionally, bitter foods were a big component of any standard diet. These foods were believed to help support digestion by supporting the natural function of the stomach, liver and gallbladder.

Overtime, these foods were consumed less and less. To the point where many have lost the acquired taste for bitters.

Foods like dandelion greens, artichoke and chicory have many health benefits including bitter properties.

As always when it comes to food, supplements or herbs they need to fit with your personal constitution. So these foods are not recommended in active ulcers, sever gallbladder dysfunction or sensitive stomachs.

The core feature of acne is increased sebum production and keratinocyte proliferation.

One of the key driving forces of this overactivity on the skin is often inflammation, which in most cases can be rooted back to gut health.

The most commonly seen GI infections in those struggling with acne include:

⚡H. pylori, Candida & parasitic infections.

A dysbiotic GI tract can contribute to acne in many different ways which all come back to increased inflammatory pathways (cytokines, Th17 etc.), decreased anti-inflammatory activity by the beneficial microbiome, and impacts on glucose/insulin metabolism, which can further exacerbate androgenic acne as well.

As with any other condition, the absolute best place to start is always with the digestive tract.

You Want To:
⚡Address the source of inflammation
✨GI infections
✨Food sensitivities,
✨Leaky gut
✨Toxins
✨Blood sugar dysregulation
⚡Address Diet & Lifestyle
⚡Address Hormones if indicated
⚡Implement Topical Treatments

Given that histamine-driven symptoms mimic many psychiatric & neurological conditions including:

🧠anxiety, depression, attention problems, insomnia, panic, cognitive impairment

They are often mis-diagnosed.

Histamine intolerance occurs when histamine intake or production exceeds the body’s ability to break it down.

Majority of cases involving histamine intolerance/overload can be rooted back to gut health.

This can include:
🌿impaired DAO enzyme activity due to inflammation or impaired gut lining
🌿higher levels of histamine-producing bacteria (Staph, Proteus, Enterococcus etc.)
🌿diet high in histamine which can't be modulated due to poor digestive function

Other common factors include:
⚡poor methylation - MTHFR, COMT polymorphism
⚡toxin overload & burdened liver
⚡nutritional deficiencies (vitamin C, B6, B12, folate, mg, cu, zn, SAMe, choline etc.)

If you are curious, TEST, don't guess, through functional testing you can assess digestive function, methylation, homocysteine, nutrient status, oxidative stress markers & toxic burden.

The body's "fight or flight" response, also known as the sympathetic nervous response, can be continually activated with chronic stress.

When this happens your body's natural default will be to fall into the stress response to protect you from danger even if there is no threat present.

Depending on how long you have been operating from fight or fight your signs and symptoms can differ vastly.

As time progresses more and more body systems will be involved and your symptoms may switch from constant nervousness and tension to complete hopelessness and cyclical negative thoughts.

There are many ways to help support your body to naturally shift out of the stress response which is a completely individualized process.

The first step is to recognize where you are at and start implementing some practices to help you step into a more relaxed state of being.

There is a lot of nervous system re-training and nutritional support that is also required to allow your system to ease into balance and harmony.

Out of all the hormonal testing I have run for women, only a handful have come back as true estrogen dominance.

Majority of the test results actually show low levels of estrogen. So the last thing you want to do is implement a protocol to further reduce these levels.

When it comes to hormones it's all about RELATIVITY. You want to see their values in relation to one another.

I explained in detail the relationship between the gut and estrogen dominance in my post titled "The Gut & Breast Cancer Link." If you haven't seen that post, I have some nice graphics illustrating the mechanism behind this.

To Summarize:

The β-glucuronidase enzyme, expressed by certain gut bacteria reactivates estrogens.

This reactivation allows “free” estrogens to be recirculated back into the bloodstream, possibly contributing to a variety of hormonal disorders including endometriosis & PCOS.

Many studies now show that high systemic estrogen & high ratio of circulating estrogen metabolites is considered a strong risk factor for estrogen-related diseases.

Reduced gut microbiota diversity may be related to higher abundance of bacterial species that express β-glucoronidase which speeds up estrogen becoming free estrogen.

If your test results are coming back "normal" but you still feel off, starting with digestive health may not be a bad idea as it could be revealing in regards to your health concerns.

❔"Do I need to run all of these tests?"
💬 NO

You only need to run tests that are pertinent to your case. This can be determined by having a conversation with your healthcare provider who can guide you towards which test is right for you based on your unique case history.

Your body isn't composed of one component
A single lab value doesn't give the full picture laboratory results are meant to be interpreted in relation to each other for accurate diagnosis.

Keep in mind the tests listed above give an indication that there is inflammation present. However, they do not tell you WHAT the ROOT CAUSE of that inflammation is.

Stay tuned for Part II where we will cover the hidden ways that inflammation can show up in your body and the most common root causes.

For many, weight loss isn't just about cutting calories or increasing cardio.

If there is resistant weight loss it's often due to an underlying metabolic issue that has yet to be uncovered.

What most of the conditions mentioned in the above slides have in common is inflammation. When your body is constantly try to put out a "fire" it isn't going to simultaneously think about weight loss.

I find some of the most stubborn cases of weight loss are those where the weight was put on during a stressful period (ie. pandemic).

Once you find the right formula for your particular body then you should no longer be in this resistant state. Because you are supporting your body in the way that it needs.

There are so many different ways that the gut causes depression. Mainly this happens through toxin exposure via the presence of overgrowth of certain bacteria, fungi or parasites. The presence of harmful endotoxins combined with gastrointestinal inflammation leads to systemic inflammation and eventual neuroinflammation.

Inflammation has now become widely recognised as the undercurrent of many mental health conditions including depression.

Mental health conditions are not always rooted in emotional or traumatic experiences. In fact, the presence of harmful microbes in the gut can make seemingly manageable stressors seems insurmountable.

Always start with a through investigation of your health so that you can have a focused approach not just a one size fits all.
