Heading into December AND with Christina being away Nov 19 - Dec 5, our schedule is busier and ever!!

We'd like to remind everyone that JaneApp has a handy wait list function to help you make appointment requests. Our schedule is in constant flux due to busy schedules and being in the thick of cold/flu/COVID season, so openings are constantly becoming available!

First, select the type of treatment you wish to book.

If the time frame you are looking for is booked up, never fear...just click on the link on the BOTTOM LEFT of our booking page and add yourself on the waiting list.

⚠️ Most importantly, please remember to set the desired time frame you are available so you get the booking you require and not send our H&H acupunks on a wild goose chase because you didn't communicate your needs. ⚠️

⏰️ We are often solo during our shifts, so we are usually busy with clients and aren't always available to answer the phone or reply to emails. Using the wait list is more efficient and ensures your requested availability is readily available if a suitable time slot opens up. ⏰️

We probably sound like a broken record, but BOOKING AHEAD is the surest way to get the appointments you need, not to mention that advanced planning is a good step towards committing to a course of treatment!

Using the wait list helps us help you get the treatment you need.

Thank you in advance for using it!

It's that time of year again 🎉🎉🎉

One of the things Christina looks forward to each fall is the release of the new Hope in Shadows calendar and she happened to visiting the traditional territories of the Squamish, Musqueam, and Tsleil-Waututh peoples to pick up the new 2026 calendars in-person at headquarters 👏👏👏

These new calendars will adorn the Heart & Hands lobby and clinic rooms in the new year as we've always done for the past decade 🫶

Every year in May, our Hope in Shadows calendar project engages up to 150 Downtown Eastside (DTES) community members in a photo contest. Participants are provided a theme, disposable camera and training on how to gather consent from photo subjects, and sent out into the streets for 5 days to take images of their lives. Returned cameras are developed, resulting in up to 2500 images for a jury of community members and staff to parse down to the Top 30.

Starting in October, the calendar is purchased by Megaphone vendors for $10 and sold on the street for $20, with vendors keeping the profits. Every year, dozens of vendors return to Megaphone during the calendar season to sell calendars to be able to afford holiday gifts for friends and family, or to increase their income.

Despite communities grappling with poverty and social marginalizion being subject to extensive scrutiny and reporting, the media rarely captures the complete story. Hope in Shadows showcases photography that counters prevailing narratives and captures the essence of marginalized communities with familiarity and affection. It allows participants to reclaim their image.

After the doozy of a shift Wednesday evening, it's clear we need to remind everyone about our policies.

Lateness, although unintentional (we hope) is a major factor that affects the flow and quality of treatment our Community Acupuncture team provides to our large clientbase, not to mention making it pretty stressful for your practitioner.

And in order to keep our rates affordable, we depend on our clients to arrive on time so we can stay on track with our 4-5 clients / hour capacity. We have 15 minutes allotted to each client, so when you arrive 5, 10 minutes late, the amount of time your acupunk has to work with you gets shorter and shorter....

Out of consideration of your acupunk, your fellow acu-nappers and the quality of the care we provide, here are a few things we need our client base to support us with:

⏰️ You should be IN your recliner at the start of your appointment time. Clients should be arriving at least 5 minutes before so they have time for payment, bathroom, etc.

⏰️ Please add the $2 late charge to your treatment fees if you arrive 5+ minutes late to your appointment. Your acupunk should be compensated for having to rush to provide you care.

⏰️ When you are late, you are cutting short not only the amount of time your acupunk has to work with you, but you may also be cutting into the appointment time of the client booked after you, which is frankly unfair.

⏰️ When you receive your email appointment reminders 36 hrs before your scheduled timeslot, please take note of the appointment DATE + TIME. The number of clients arriving at the clinic on the wrong day or appointment time seems to be increasing...

⏰️ If you do not use or regularly check your email, please put systems in place to remind yourself of the appointment you have booked.

Be accountable for the timeslot you have booked, as our scheduling is limited.

Respect for your practitioner and your fellow clients, help us help you get the treatment you need. Do your part and BE ON TIME.

Write us a Google Review, help others in the community find us!

We would be delighted if you could take 2 minutes to rate Heart & Hands and write a short review so you can let others in the community know about our services, social impact and to make it easier for them to find us!

And with H&H being one of the few remaining safe spaces for the medically vulnerable, it is ESPECIALLY important that we collect Google Reviews from folks who choose to visit us because of our continued masking efforts!

Fall is here...it's time for moxa!

The seasonal transition to cooler, damper and darker days are upon us. The descending energy of the fall season is well upon us 🌅🌧

THIS IS THE TIME our ancestors traditionally to prepare for the change of season through stockpiling the harvest, changes in diet and wardrobe, but also boosting our resistance to illness using tools such as the magical, warming and invigorating Moxabustion! Late summer and into early fall is moxa time. And since we are still living in a pandemic world, it is of the utmost importance that we protect and support our immune systems as we enter another school year.

Chinese style moxabustion or “moxa” consists of mugwort (Artemesia vulgaris) rolled into a cigar-like stick. This stick is ignited and the heat from the stick is indirectly applied over regions of the body or specific acupuncture points. Moxa has properties to warm the acupuncture meridians (heat can often be felt traveling along channels), stimulate circulation of qi and blood, boosts vitality and opens pores or collaterals. It has been traditionally used on specific acupuncture points during the changes of season to boost immunity and prevent illnesses such as the common cold and flu.

In case you weren't aware, we have smokeless moxa sticks and post-COVID/viral recovery kits, complete with detailed instructions in our lobby:

🔥$2.50 for single sticks
🔥$6 for post-COVID recovery kits
