Healthy body, healthy mind.

At Berwick, we believe in the importance of emotional well-being within our communities. Last month, Berwick Qualicum Beach residents participated in an Mat Yoga & Stability ball class:

Residents sat on the stability ball, focusing on balance, core strength, and controlled movement to build stability and awareness in the body. They moved at a comfortable pace, supporting both strength and stretching, leaving the residents feeling more balanced, strong, and relaxed. 🧘‍♀️

Last Friday, Berwick on the Park had the honour of hosting a tea in celebration of Carla Krens, one of our residents who received a Sovereign’s award for Volunteerism. MP Mel Arnold, of the Kamloops–Shuswap–Central Rockies, praises Carla for her accomplishment, “Carla Krens is being recognized for her outstanding volunteer service and the positive impact she has made through her dedication and leadership within the community."

The 1970's are back! Bell-bottom jeans, funky outfits and accessories were enjoyed by residents and team members. Berwick Comox Valley had a fabulous 70’s themed lunch. Residents went to thrift stores and really put their creativity into their costumes, while other residents wore what they had in their closets. A few residents and team members participated in the flash mob that was put on “unexpectedly” in the Dining Room. Tables were covered with fun placemats and center pieces with quotes saying, “Groovy”, “I Love the 70’s” and “Peace, Love & Rock and Roll”.

On March 7, Berwick Parksville residents participated in a cultural experience with First Nations drum maker and cultural educator, Phil Mills, through learning how to create drums, using real hides. The following week, Bill Helin, local artist, drummer and storyteller, along with Phil, returned to help the residents make drumsticks and “awaken” the drums through a First Nations cultural ceremony. Last week, Bill Helin returned to teach the residents how to paint the drums with a focus on an animal of their choice in the First Nations art style.

Berwick Comox Valley residents recently had the opportunity to attend a month-long workshop. Carol Lazar – resident of Berwick Comox Valley – was not only surprised but also pleased that Berwick community interest was so strong. By the time she reached the fourth and final week of the course, Carole had talked about Family Law, encompassing Marriage, Divorce, Custody, and Guardianship, Property Division, Support Obligations, and the increased encouragement and use of mediation.

Berwick House residents learn about ‘Ikigai,’ with speaker Eri, from Japan. In its English translation, ‘Ikigai’ is Japanese for “a reason for being,” ‘Iki’ meaning ‘alive’ and ‘gai’ meaning ‘worth.’ Residents experienced connection, cognitive stimulation, cultural meaning, and a sense of ‘Ikigai’ through finding small joys and meaning in everyday life. A big shout out to the terrific Berwick Balladeers at Berwick by the Sea for their recent "sold-out" performance!

Their choir brought residents and guests together for an afternoon filled with beautiful music and joy. From familiar tunes to heartfelt harmonies, it was a wonderful reminder of how music has the power to connect and uplift us all.
