⚠️ Leptospirosis Case Confirmed on the Island ⚠️
We have recently identified a positive case of Leptospirosis on the Island. Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that can affect dogs and is transmissible to humans.
The bacteria is most commonly spread through water or wet soil contaminated with the urine of infected animals—particularly wildlife such as rodents or raccoons. Infected dogs may appear healthy while still shedding the bacteria in their urine. The organism can survive for weeks to months in moist, urine-contaminated soil.
🐾 Dogs at higher risk include those who:
• Drink from puddles or stagnant water (ponds, lakes, streams)
• Roam rural properties
• Have exposure to wildlife or farm animals
• Visit dog parks, boarding, or training facilities
🚨 Signs of Leptospirosis can vary, but may include:
• Loss of appetite
• Vomiting or diarrhea
• Lethargy or fever
• Increased drinking
• Abdominal pain
• Jaundice
• Dehydration
• Muscle stiffness or pain
In severe cases, Leptospirosis can lead to kidney or liver failure, lung complications, or bleeding disorders.
💉 We carry the Leptospirosis vaccine, which helps protect both your dog and your family. This vaccine is now widely considered part of core vaccination protocols for most dogs.
If your pet may be at risk or you’re unsure whether they are up to date, please contact our team to discuss protection options. You can also check your dog's vaccine status on our App!
