Also known as nearsightedness, myopia causes blurry vision at distances and complicates everyday activities like driving. Unfortunately, myopia is also common among children, impacting their ability to pay attention in the classroom.

That’s why it’s so important to take your kids into the optometrist at least once a year for a standard eye checkup. Your optometrist will be able to spot myopia and other conditions that can be treated and corrected before things get worse.

Did you know that cataracts are the most common cause of degraded vision in BC? In 2024, the Canadian Institute for Health Information released a report that ranked BC first in the country for the percentage of patients meeting clinical benchmarks for cataract surgeries. The most recent data reported 70,000 cataract surgeries per year!

The good news is that cataract surgery is a relatively simple process – usually no longer than 30 minutes. If you’re concerned about the possibility of developing cataracts, have a chat with your optometrist.

We know that humans have excellent vision, but how about our furry friends? Dogs have decent vision, but as you probably already know, it’s far from great.

Humans have three types of cones that detect colour, whereas dogs have only two that detect blue and yellow light. As a result, not only can dogs not see as far as us, they can’t see as many colours.

Been a while since your most recent eye exam? If so, it’s probably been years. Not to worry – with the exception of some shiny new technology, not much should’ve changed since your last visit to the optometrist’s office.

Halloween is right around the corner! The spookiest day of the year is fun for the whole family, whether you’re trick-or-treating, carving pumpkins or watching scary movies.

Halloween can also be a dangerous time. It’s dark outside, there could be firecrackers flying around, and people are partying — especially this year, when Halloween lands on a Friday.

With an Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) machine, our optometrists have the ability to detect numerous eye conditions and diseases, including macular degeneration, glaucoma, hereditary retinal issues and more. The best part is this machine is completely non-invasive, relying only on images.

Worried your eyesight isn’t good enough for driving anymore?

Drivers must be able to pass cognitive, general health and vision tests. In BC, drivers must meet specific visual acuity standards, such as no less than 20/50 vision and a continuous 120-degree visual field in at least one eye. Once you turn 80 years old, you’ll be tested every year to retain your license.
