Black Spruce Acupuncture

Black Spruce Acupuncture Gentle, rejuvenating Japanese-style acupuncture for relieving pain, balancing hormones, regulating digestion, sleep, energy, and more
-Alix Jean, R.Ac.

Why Black Spruce? This adaptable little evergreen thrives in Canada from coast to coast, even in poor boggy soils near my home in northern BC. Like a breath of sharp northern air in the forest, black spruce is powerfully grounding and calming. It is considered sacred in First Nations medicine; both nourishing stimulating to the nervous system, and is ideal especially for those feeling depleted. Black spruce portrays a symbol of symbiotic relationships, understanding one's own healing path, exploring lofty ideas, connecting with the Earth, and finding one's unique way of reaching Spirit.

It’s been a while since I’ve properly introduced myself, so here it is:

I’m Alix, the owner of Black Spruce Acupuncture, where I primarily serve the Victoria and Langford communities with gentle, safe, and effective Japanese acupuncture. I’m passionate about spreading the word on the benefits of Japanese acupuncture, but as a new mom, I haven’t been posting much. I believe the internet could use some positivity, so I plan to reestablish a regular schedule to share insights on what acupuncture is, its benefits, its workings, and all the wonderful services our practitioners provide. Whether you’ve been following for a while or are new here, I’m thrilled to have you.

After months of winter’s quiet, everything is starting to wake up—buds on the trees, longer days, that feeling of fresh energy in the air. While the light begins its return at the winter solstice, the Lunar New Year marks the stirring of new life—a threshold between dormancy and growth.

In this season’s newsletter, we’re exploring the slow shift into spring—not too slow but not too fast—and why the Year of the Yin Wood Snake invites patience before action. Read on in the link in bio for this, plus more ways to align with the season through foods and practices. 🌿🌱

Heard all the buzz about infra red heat therapy?

With the ancient practice of moxibustion, or burning mugwort (artemesia vulgaris), acupuncturists have been using infrared heat for a centuries alongside needles in acupuncture treatment to enhance effectiveness.

In Japanese acupuncture, moxibustion may be applied directly on the skin (direct moxibustion) or indirectly (using a moxa applicator or placing moxa on the acupuncture needle) over specific acupuncture points. The choice of technique depends on the patient’s condition and sensitivity.

Moxibustion is a valuable complementary therapy that enriches the practice of Japanese style acupuncture, focusing on holistic healing and patient care.

As we head towards shorter days and colder weather, the benefit of regular treatment incorporating moxibustion can help sustain our energy and nourish our digestive systems, immune systems and nervous systems. Head to the bio for a booking link. 🙏🍂🌗

We all know high hemoglobin are helpful for energy, and these numbers are assessed for anemia, but is your healthcare practitioner assessing hemoglobin relative to hematocrit in pregnancy? As the pregnancy advances, blood volume naturally increases and viscosity (thickness) should naturally decrease. Higher hemoglobin in early pregnancy coupled with higher hematocrit and hemoglobin in later pregnancy can indicate the chances of preeclampsia are higher, especially with advanced maternal age. The diagnostics of don’t traditionally include bloodwork, but in this case if you’re pregnant, bring your results to our session and we’ll support your blood levels to reduce later pregnancy risks with 🌿

Room for Practitioner to Rent and/or Mentorship in Japanese Acupuncture in Langford BC
Room available to acupuncturist/TCMP on Sat/Sun/Mondays (with possibility of other half days if needed) in a small health collective near Goldstream, on Station Ave.
This is an up and coming neighbourhood with tons of folks moving to the area. It would be best suited to a registered acupuncturist or TCM practitioner with some existing clientele.
The Clinic:
Our collective is currently made of 1 TCM Practitioner, 3 RMT’s, and 2 counsellors. We share the waiting room, office amenities, laundry machines and cleaner cost but all are self-employed.
As a collective, we value quiet, cleanliness, and those who work well independently while able to come together on common concerns. The contract is a sublease so the vast majority of office concerns will be taken care of for you. Month to month contract.
Common Amenities: laundry, small kitchenette with mini fridge, microwave, tea kettle, waiting room (usually door is locked in between appointments), staff and patient washrooms, weekly cleaning service on all common areas.
The Room:
Large with big bright windows and furnished with light/white decor, heated wide Master massage table, Bose sound, HEPA air filtration, ergonomic practitioner stool. Access to TDP lamp and linens possible. Moxa allowed.
The Options:
1. For non-acupuncturists or those interested in renting without practice collaboration, the flat rent is $150 “per day per month” (i.e. $450 for all Sat/Sun/Mondays of the month, with 6-hour shifts or $550 for a month of Sat/Sun/Mon all day), plus GST. Please note this is the rental fee for the full month, not the week. Option to work 5ish til 8ish on Thursdays and Fridays as well with rates TBD. BYO linens, marketing, clientele and treatment supplies.
2. Potential for a mentorship/associate arrangement with access to online booking & direct billing (Janeapp), support to learn your own direct billing, linens, TDP, web listings, social media presence, and other practice-building support. Best fit for someone with interest in Japanese acupuncture, or in utilizing a TCM herbal dispensary with 70+ organic ground raw herbs from Spring Wind. Percentage split 70/30 with base rent and cap negotiable.
I have been in practice since 2014 in Greater Victoria and have built a thriving solo practice and loyal clientele focussed solely on one-to-one appointments with interactive hands-on sessions. I work with a lot of chronic pain management, hormone and digestive health, and concussion management and I would love to offer support on tricky cases, help build practice and skills, and spread this medicine especially on Japanese acupuncture techniques. If this sounds like a good fit or if you have further questions, please message me directly! alix@blackspruceacupuncture.com
