How can our community change to better support people?
Homelessness costs the Canadian economy $7.05 billion annually — and those numbers are from 2013, so we can only imagine the adjustment needed to reflect the pandemic and inflation — which includes emergency shelters, community supports, health care and the criminal justice system.
Significant research has been done to contrast the cost of ‘housing’ someone in jail, hospitals or the shelter system to social or supportive housing and the difference is stark.
Not only is putting someone in housing a cheaper option, it’s the right thing to do. Housing first provides immediate access to permanent housing, giving people a stable place to land while working on other aspects of their lives.
