Pain during massage therapy does not indicate that treatment is more effective.
When pressure is too intense, the nervous system may shift into a protective response. This can lead to increased muscle guarding, changes in breathing, and reduced tissue receptivity — all of which can limit therapeutic progress.
Massage therapy is most effective when pressure remains within a tolerable range, allowing the body to relax and respond to treatment rather than resist it.
Some discomfort may occur. Pain is not required.
