It is Fall Prevention Month! We have already started with our re-vamped Fall policy. Falls for the year are significantly down this year (59 to end of Sept) over last year (146 total). We track each fall and discuss each one at a monthly Falls Prevention Team meeting. This team is interdisciplinary with Registered Nurses, PSW’s, Physio staff and Activity staff. Fall prevention is not only for our residents, but for our staff as well. We want everyone to be safe!

Babcock Community Care Centre News - October 28, 2025

Residents are looking forward to the upcoming Halloween celebrations. They have been working diligently at packing approximately 100 candy bags for the trick or treaters. They will be welcoming everyone at 6 pm on October 31st so plan on dropping by. Decorations in the main area will take place during this week. Thanks to John Kennedy for bringing the many pumpkins for decorating the entrance outside. Craft time had residents making bats, ghosts, zombies and Frankenstein cut outs. They have been enjoying the pumpkin torte dessert served by the staff. Everyone appreciated the colourful flowers brought in for each table by staff member Lisa Willson. Residents and staff will be dressing up for the party earlier in the day.

Everyone gathered for the special staff presentation held for years of service at Babcock Community Care. This included Terri Lynn Jeffery for 20 years, Lisa Willson for 20 years, Bozena Bladek for 20 years and Katie Harris for 15 years. Each one was presented with a framed certificate along with 2 dozen beautiful coloured roses. A delicious Chinese food dinner was enjoyed for lunch from Jin’s Wicked Wok and a random draw was made for several prizes for staff members.

Residents really have fun at their Bingo games scheduled usually at least 3 times a week. But this month it was even more interesting when resident Margaret Watts’ granddaughter, Nicole Weir, donated shirts with Bingo Buddies in large print written on them. Everyone is very happy wearing these and I am sure they will bring each resident lots of luck!

The Heartbeats group met in the activity area to exercise and have fun to fast beat music playing in the background. Physiotherapy is given as needed to residents by the Physiotherapist who visits from Four Counties Health Services.

The Pen Pals program had 10 residents receiving a letter or a post card and a gift. They gathered to read all the messages. Movie Night had residents watching the great hit “The King and I.” Crunchy treats and refreshments were served during the show. Residents are still enjoying their roll and stroll activity outside as weather permits. M’s General Variety from Thamesville donated a selection of local newspapers including the London Free Press and Toronto Sun for the reading program. Residents enjoy catching up on the daily news so they really appreciated the papers. Communion was given this month to residents of the Catholic faith by Shelley Coad and Mary Lou DePelsmaeker.

Residents gathered around the large screen television to watch the Blue Jays game. Chips, salsa and other snacks were served, along with refreshments. It was a very exciting game.

The new building is progressing along as planned. Watch for new photos as they are taken of the progress. Now is the time to place your name on the waiting list if you are in need of long-term care.

We collect data on every resident in every quarter on different quality indicators. Let’s look at worsening pain.
Worsening pain was 28.9% of residents (11/38 residents) prior to new policy launch in the quarter July to Sept 2024.
Last quarter, July to Sept 2025, it was 10.3% (4/39 residents). A significant decrease!

**Because we are a small home, the numbers may still look large as one or two people can raise the percentage. These 4 residents are actually well managed in their pain but used a “when needed” med during this time for occasional breakthrough pain. We count everything.

We have been busy over the past 2 years with Clinical Pathways and added BPSO this past April. These two programs are different but with the same goal in mind, better care for our residents! We have 5 more Best Practice Guidelines to implement over the next 2.5 years between both programs. They include Dementia Care, Depression, Transitions in Care, Continence, and Skin and Wound Care. This allows us to upgrade our assessments and change our policies to provide Best Practice Care to everyone. There are over 50 Guidelines that are used and recognized around the world in various settings like hospitals, LTC, and Community.

We are training staff to become Best Practice Champions! These ladies are from multiple departments to promote Best Practices and evidenced-based care throughout the home. Our BPSO Leads are taking the extra training to be able to train people in-house as well.

They are looking for staff from all departments, family, and even residents if they wish. The more the merrier! Please see Annette QIRN or Christina QIRPN if you would like to be a Best Practice Champion!

Birthday cake and ice-cream were served during the celebration.

The wine and cheese party was a great success with lots of finger foods served, as well as a variety of non-alcoholic wines. The variety of foods included fruit trays, vegetable trays, a variety of Evelyn’s sausage, pepperoni sticks, sliced pepperoni and a delicious variety of cheeses and dips. Special bread was served to compliment the spinach dips. Wedding Anniversary wishes are extended to John and Anita Kendall.

Jeremy Smith visited and entertained residents with his musical program. Tigger and Wendy came to join everyone during the pet therapy program. Sybil and Remy visited during the pet therapy session. Everyone loves to see the animals. Shelley C and MaryLou DePelsmaeker gave Communion to residents of the Catholic faith on two separate days this month. Residents are busy exercising daily on the Nu-Step cross-trainers. A group of residents gathered in the activity area to have a manicure and nails were touched up with nail polish. Residents always enjoy playing a variety of games; they include darts, horse racing, the Price is Right, matching games, Wii bowling, virtual quiz, wheel of words, balloon toss and snakes and ladders. Bingo was played several times during the week with a prize choice from a variety of chocolate bars.

The Sunday apple social hour was appreciated especially now with all the delicious newly harvested apples. Blueberry treats are also a favourite. Patio time is starting to come to an end due to the inclement weather we have been experiencing. Residents are looking forward to wing and pizza night this week. The newspaper group gathered in the activity area to review all the news locally and of around the world. The movie matinee had a large group watching the featured movie. They enjoyed a variety of treats at the movie including chocolate popcorn.

During the nice weather residents are having their outdoor walks and getting a sneak peek of the new long-term care facility being built close by. Everyone is getting excited about the upcoming move in early spring. Now is the time to place your name on the waiting list if you or your loved ones are in need of long-term care. Residents in the home at the time of the move will be given first choice of the new rooms.

The black forest cookie treats were a huge hit with everyone. Residents appreciate the tuck cart filled with a variety of different items, as it makes its way around the halls and into their rooms. The book club gathered and read a few of their preferred stories. A social hour followed. Everyone always has a great time when Music Connections is scheduled. Babcock Community Care welcomes Ruth Mach and Bob Phillips as their newest residents. Deepest sympathy is extended to the family and friends of the late Norman Courts.
