Interesting follow up of a case of complex regional pain syndrome. This patient was originally assessed and underwent a trial of care in summer of 2021. Above is the comparison from 2021 to today.
Complex Regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a broad term that covers long lasting pain and inflammation that usually develops in the arm or hand after an injury, stroke or a heart attack or it can occur spontaneously with no clear cause. CRPS in this case lead to stiffness of the joints and ligaments, skin issues, and severe pain. This pain can be one of the worst to experience, even a stroke of a feather can create immense pain due to altered pain perception. This can lead to disability for many years, or in other cases it can improve within a year.
The patient was treated with electro acupuncture and adjustments to reduce pain. After three months the pain subsided by 100%. However the stiffness persisted and she required surgery for a more complete recovery of her mobility.
This was a complex case which ultimately required interdisciplinary care, but I was amazed as a practitioner to see how simple chiropractic interventions aided this process. Sometimes in complex cases the outcome of therapy is less clear, but often worth a trial. We love when patients return to share their progress.

This exercise is called a reverse wall plank and it can be used to target tension in your thoracic spine.
1. Find a wall
2. Get into a wall sit or chair position
3. Keeping your arms tight to your body, push away from the wall using your elbows, by drawing your shoulder blades together
Tip: try to keep your shoulders, neck and hips in line as you push away from the wall
