Just like you wouldn’t wait for your car to break down before an oil change, your mental health needs regular care too. Therapy is a way to check in, reset, and stay well before things feel overwhelming.

Taking care of yourself early is one of the strongest forms of self-support.

It’s not about avoiding conflict, but learning how to communicate through it. Small shifts in how you listen, speak, and respond can make all the difference.

Couples counselling can help you rebuild trust, strengthen your connection, and find healthier ways to grow together.

Supporting someone you love starts with caring for yourself. 💛

When your partner is struggling with their mental health, it can be easy to pour all your energy into helping them. But the most supportive thing you can do is make sure your own mental health is steady first.

Taking time to rest, reflect, and recharge puts you in the best position to show up with empathy and strength.

🎥 Upstream therapist, Lindsay Claire, shares how self-care is the foundation for supporting a partner through difficult times.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) helps you understand how your thoughts, feelings, and actions are connected. It teaches you practical ways to shift unhelpful patterns and build new habits that support your well-being.

It’s one of the most effective forms of therapy for anxiety, depression, and stress. With the help of a therapist, you’ll learn to notice your thinking patterns, challenge negative thoughts, and develop tools for a calmer, more balanced life.

If you’ve been feeling stuck, CBT can help you move forward with clarity and confidence.

Active listening is one of the easiest ways to make your relationship stronger.

When your partner talks, try pausing what you’re doing and giving them your full attention. Put your phone down, listen carefully, and reflect back what you’ve heard. It shows that you care and helps your partner feel understood. Over time, this small habit builds trust and connection.

🎥 Tip shared by Toyosi, Therapist at Upstream Counselling
Inspired by the work of Dr. John Gottman

Try it tonight. Next time your partner shares something, listen to understand, not to respond.

💭 Meet Your Inner Parts

Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy helps us understand that we’re made up of many “parts” or different inner voices that each have a role in keeping us safe.

Some parts carry pain from the past (Exiles).
Others work hard to stay in control (Managers).
And some jump in to put out emotional fires (Firefighters).

At your core is the Self: calm, compassionate, and capable of leading with understanding rather than fear.

In therapy, we help you get to know each part with curiosity and care, so your inner world can find balance and healing.

🌿 Ready to explore your inner system? Book a session with an Upstream Counselling therapist today.

These patterns can quietly shape our daily lives. Feeling exhausted at work, getting overwhelmed without knowing why, racing thoughts, constant apologizing, restless nights, or anxious habits like picking or pulling.

Therapy helps you understand what’s happening beneath the surface. Together, you can explore where these patterns come from, learn how your mind and body are connected, and build tools to create real change.

You don’t have to manage it on your own. Book a session with an Upstream Counselling therapist today and take the first step toward understanding yourself with more compassion.

EMDR therapy was first developed to help people heal from trauma, including PTSD and Complex PTSD. Over the years, research has shown that EMDR is also effective for a wide range of mental health challenges such as anxiety, OCD, depression, eating disorders, insomnia, addictions, and more.

With EMDR, your brain can reprocess painful experiences so they no longer have the same hold on your life. Healing is possible and you do not have to carry it alone.

Book a free consultation today through the link in our bio to learn how EMDR therapy can support your journey.

EMDR, which stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is a therapy that helps your brain process painful memories so they no longer control the present. You are not required to relive every detail. Sessions move at a pace that feels safe, using grounding techniques and bilateral stimulation such as eye movements or gentle tapping.

Many people begin to feel more present in their body, less triggered by old patterns, and more compassionate toward themselves. Early sessions can feel stirred up as your nervous system adjusts. This is normal and temporary. Your therapist will provide you with regulation tools and clear steps so you always feel supported.

If you are wondering whether EMDR could help with trauma, anxiety, panic, grief, or other stressful life events, we would love to talk. Book a free consultation through the link in our bio or send us a message today.

🌍 Today is World Su***de Prevention Day which is a day to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and remind one another that su***de is preventable.

📊 Did you know?
• Every year, over 700,000 people worldwide die by su***de.
• In Canada, it’s among the leading causes of death for people aged 15–34.
• For every su***de, there are many more attempts, and even more people struggling silently.

⚠️ Common warning signs include:
• Talking about hopelessness, being a burden, or wanting to die
• Withdrawing from friends, family, and activities
• Major changes in mood, sleep, or behaviour
• Increased alcohol or drug use

💛 What you can do:
• Start the conversation by asking, “How are you really doing?”
• Listen without judgment
• Encourage professional support
• Stay connected and check in often

🌱 If you are struggling: You are not alone. Call or text 988 in Canada for immediate help, or reach out to a trusted friend, family member, or therapist.

At Upstream Counselling, we’re here to provide support and guidance during life’s hardest moments.

Back to school brings new routines and big feelings. If your child feels clingy wired or wiped you are not alone. Small steady steps can make the transition easier.

Try this plan:
1. Name the feeling and normalize it
2. Create a short consistent goodbye ritual
3. Keep mornings predictable with a checklist
4. Plan a snack and quiet time after school
5. Talk about the day later with one good and one hard thing

If anxieties last more than two weeks or begin to disrupt sleep appetite or learning support can help. Upstream Counselling works with kids parents and caregivers in Kitchener-Waterloo and Online!
