Hello Rx2024s! 😊

We wanted to remind all of you who have signed up that the Trivia Night will take place this evening at 7PM via Zoom. Please arrive around 15 minutes earlier to discuss the rules and how the night will go. Thank you for all of you who signed up, we have a big turnout of 10 teams!! Due to the large number of teams, we will be breaking the event into two breakout rooms to make things more manageable. We have attached the Zoom link to this post, so please refer to it to enter the Zoom event.

It is highly recommended that you take a look at the Google sign-up sheet and form ways to communicate with your team (via messenger for example), since some teams may have new members added and that will make it easier for everyone to get to know each other and chat with one another.

For those of you who did not sign up and would still like to watch the event, please feel free to attend! Looking forward to seeing everyone tonight! Thank you 😊

This week we are looking into common compounds that are used to treat babies experiencing acid reflux/GERD.

It is not uncommon for babies to experience GERD. However, before a PPI or H2RA medication is prescribed, the infant and care giver should try non-pharmacologic strategies such as thickening agents if the infant is bottle fed, keeping the infant upright and investigating food intolerances. If the infant is prescribed a PPI or H2RA, the prescription will be compounded. In the second image, you can see a list of some of the most commonly compounded formulations used for this indication!

BTW! We will be posting "most commonly used formulas in practice" weekly! This is a great opportunity for students and clinicians to stay up to date on the most common compounds and formulas!

Be sure to keep your eyes open weekly for our posts!👀

What is the difference between BRAND vs GENERIC drug products?

There is a common misconception that brand name drugs are better than the generic version, however generic drugs are equally as effective and safe as their brand name counterpart. In fact, brand name and generic drugs are produced under the same standards of FDA’s good manufacturing practice regulations.

Why the huge cost difference? Generic drugs may be considerably cheaper because the time and money required for development are much less compared to brand name drug development.

Keeping these factors in mind, whether you decide to go with the brand or generic drug is completely up to you/your patient’s preference!

WHEN IS COMPOUNDING USED?

Compounding can always appear in your clinical practice even if you do not end up working in a compounding pharmacy. This field of pharmacy is unique because pharmacists and the pharmacy team create custom drug formulations to meet specific needs of the patient that cannot be met otherwise.

It is important to familiar with the situations when compounding can be utilized to treat medical conditions and increase patient-centered care.

Swipe to see some of the most common ways to apply compounding to your clinical practice and to enhance patient care.
