Books are powerful tools that open up tough conversations in a safe, relatable way. They allow children to see themselves (or others) in a story, practice empathy, and learn social skills before they need them in real life.

To help you start those important talks about kindness and standing up to others, here are a few of our team’s favourites:
📔Stick and Stone
📕A Little Spot of Kindness
📘Have You Filled a Bucket Today?
📙I am We
📗The Buddy Bench

A good book is a gentle, effective lesson in building a kinder community.

Friendships are vital, but how do you teach your child to spot a healthy one? 🪴

Here are 3 simple tips to help your child know the difference between a good friend and one that might not be right for them:

🩵How Do You Feel Around Them? A good friend makes you feel happy, calm, and safe. A bad friend might make you feel nervous, sad, or angry. Teach your child to trust their gut feeling.

💚The “Equal Effort” Rule: Good friends take turns talking, sharing, and choosing activities. It’s about a 50/50 effort. If the other person always wants their way or only talks about themselves, that’s a red flag.

🧡Conflict & Repair: Everyone argues, but a good friend tries to fix the problem, takes responsibility for their part, and genuinely apologizes. A bad friend might always blame others, refuse to apologize, or hold a grudge.

Empower your child to choose friends who lift them up! 💪

Sibling rivalry got you feeling like a referee? 🏃‍♂️

You’re not alone! Learning to navigate sibling conflict is a huge skill for kids. Here are 3 tips to bring peace (and teach skills) to your home:

🏆️Fair is NOT Always Equal: Teach your kids the difference. Meeting each child’s need is the goal, not giving them the exact same thing.

🏆️Use a Conflict Road Map: Establish clear, step-by-step rules for disagreements before they happen. This gives them a script when emotions run high.

🏆️Practice a Genuine Apology: Move beyond “I’m sorry.” Teach them to acknowledge the hurt, take responsibility, and make a plan to fix it.

Making and keeping friends is something many autistic youth struggle with on their own. In therapy, we can focus on teaching measurable, concrete skills for forming and maintaining healthy friendships and romantic relationships.

Here are 3 skills we work on with many of our clients:

Conversational Skills
Ex. Joining a group, initiating a conversation using common interests, keeping the conversation going by trading information, politely leave a conversation

Dating Etiquette and Boundaries
Ex. Taking ‘no’ for an answer, respecting boundaries, letting someone know you are interested in getting to know them, asking someone on a date

Handling Conflict and Rejection (Arguments, Teasing, and Gossip):
Ex. Handling arguments and disagreements in a constructive way, responding to teasing or bullying, navigating rumors/gossip

Does your teen struggle with any of these skills? Reach out today to speak with someone from our team about how we can best support them.

Q: How can therapy help my child manage stress, anxiety, or big emotions?

A: Therapy can help children recognize and label their feelings, so they can better understand and talk about what they are feeling inside.

Children can learn tools like deep breathing, asking for help, or finding a calm space to manage big emotions safely.

Therapy can be a space to guide children through everyday situations, helping them practice coping skills and learn to use them when it matters most.

Managing stress, anxiety, or big emotions is a skill. We’re here to support your child every step of the way.

Celebrating your child’s effort and success, encouraging them to use these strategies consistently and confidently!

Books are an amazing tool for helping kids and teens understand their feelings!

Here’s why:
📘They introduce kids to the language they need to talk about how they feel.
📗They normalize big feelings, showing kids they aren’t alone.
📙They create easy opportunities for grown-ups to ask questions and invite open conversations, free of judgment.

Introduce books about emotions early and read them often! It’s a simple, powerful way to build emotional intelligence. 🧠💪

Our Approach

We believe in using Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) to create fun and supportive learning environments for children and young adults with ASD and other exceptionalities. We take a child-centred approach when working with families and school staff because we believe every child deserves a chance to reach their full potential. Everyday, we see the potential for learning, and the possibilities are endless!
