Many children enjoy contributing when tasks feel manageable and meaningful.

Offering small responsibilities - passing socks to fold, placing items in a bin, or wiping a surface - can help build participation skills and confidence. Choosing tasks based on a child’s interests keeps the experience positive.

Volunteers are where a connection to KidsAbility comes full circle—for Ciara, that journey started as a client to volunteering for events, like our Sensory-Friendly Trick or Treating events last October! To celebrate , Ciara shares her story:

“My journey with KidsAbility began when I was five or six years old, after an adult in my elementary classroom noticed I had a speech impediment. I began working closely with KidsAbility’s dedicated speech‑language therapists, and I was able to overcome my lateral lisp in just a handful of months. More than finding my voice, those early sessions gave me confidence at an age when believing in myself mattered most.

"At each session, KidsAbility turned what could have felt like hard work for a child into something joyful. Therapy became play—filled with games, laughter, and encouragement. It never felt like work, yet it empowered me in ways that stayed with me long after those sessions ended.

"Two decades later, I returned to KidsAbility as a volunteer through my company, D2L, to support a sensory‑friendly trick‑or‑treating event. Giving back to the organization that transformed my life was deeply meaningful, and seeing children light up with joy reminded me of the lasting impact KidsAbility continues to have thanks to the generosity of volunteers and donors alike.”
