We had to share this great post with important info from
Enlarged tonsils and adenoids are becoming more and more common in children. I see it quite often in my practice.
Why is that? Well, enlarged tonsils and adenoids occur as a result of systemic inflammation. This can stem from a lot of different areas, but two of the major contributors are mouth breathing and gut health.
Enlarged tonsils and adenoids in growing children lead to a cascade of effects. Some of these being:
💨Reduced airflow and lower oxygen levels
👄Chronic mouth breathing, further perpetuating systemic inflammation
👅Improper tongue posture and decreased facial muscle tone
So why is it important to address? These effects can lead to more serious issues, such as 👉🏽 Impacted jaw growth and development, tooth decay and cavities, behavioral changes, sleep issues and more.
While I'm not pro-surgery, sometimes removing tonsils and adenoids is necessary - especially when it is affecting the airway, breathing and sleep.
Surgery to remove tonsils and adenoids may not always be a permanent solution as the tissues can regrow, but visiting a myofunctional therapist can help prevent regrowth and promote proper oral posture, swallowing, and nasal breathing. This is often the missing key for successful removal and healing.
