Heart disease used to be considered a โmanโs disease.โ But while rates are declining in men, theyโre rising in women.
Much of what we know about heart disease comes from research on men, which means that
Womenโs hearts, risk factors and symptoms can all be different. While both men and women often feel sharp and crushing chest pain leading up to a heart attack, many women also experience:
โ ๏ธ extreme fatigue,
โ ๏ธ an ache in the upper back and stomach
โ ๏ธ shortness of breath
Because their symptoms are less specific, they are harder to recognize as danger signs. This can lead to delays in diagnosis and treatment.
