Here's our suggestion for Halloween this year 👻

10/15/2025

Every year on Oct. 15, Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day reminds us that far too many women experience the unimaginable heartbreak of losing a pregnancy or an infant. For many, that grief is made worse in Canada by gaps in care and a health system that has not yet fully adapted to the compassionate and comprehensive services these women require and deserve.

To help close these gaps, the SOGC released a new Clinical Practice Guideline on early pregnancy loss earlier this year, which sets out a roadmap for improving the standard of care across the country. Additionally, the SOGC has been calling for a National Stillbirth Strategy that would standardize data collection, identify possible preventions and ensure that all families dealing with these tragedies are better supported and provided with compassionate care.

Informed choice is foundational to midwifery care.

The Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada (SOGC) has reaffirmed its position: acetaminophen remains a first-line option for pain and fever during pregnancy when used as recommended. Health Canada also maintains there is no conclusive evidence linking acetaminophen use in pregnancy to autism or other neurodevelopmental disorders.

Midwives support clients with evidence-based information to guide decision-making. If you have questions or concerns about using acetaminophen in pregnancy, talk to your midwife or other health-care provider.

The SOGC has issued a position statement reaffirming that acetaminophen remains a safe and appropriate first-line option for managing fever and pain during pregnancy when medically needed.

Despite claims suggesting a link between prenatal exposure to acetaminophen and certain neurodevelopmental disorders, the SOGC notes that the evidence for these claims is weak and has been consistently refuted by scientific and regulatory bodies.
In an age of growing misinformation, the SOGC urges Canadians to rely on evidence-based science and clinical expertise.

Midwifery strengthens Ontario’s health system by alleviating hospital pressures, reducing costly interventions, and improving outcomes. But without investment in education and expansion, the gap between demand and supply will only grow.
