I think of the trees and how simply they let go, let fall the riches of a season, how without grief (it seems) they can let go and go deep into their roots for renewal and sleep.... Imitate the trees. Learn to lose in order to recover, and remember that nothing stays the same for long, not even pain, psychic pain. Sit it out. Let it all pass. Let it go.

Make Changes

I’m not talking about big changes – I’m talking here about small, yet significant changes. Underlying all change is a willingness to do something differently – and it’s that willingness that is life-affirming. Saying “yes” to living fully; that’s the essence of change.

What are you willing to do differently? Here are some possibilities:

Listen to a new type of music
Read new authors
Watch a different television channel or show
Give up the evening news – it can be so disheartening!
Read (or don’t read) the daily newspaper
Exercise in a different way
Change your diet
Wake up – or go to bed – at a different time
Can you see how small these things are?

One person I know gave up watching documentaries – the harsh realities of life for most wild animals, or many human groups – can be very depressing. Instead, she chose to watch only uplifting, feel-good movies.

So, I’ll ask again, what change are you going to make?

The road through grief is a rocky one. Traveling along it requires courage, patience, wisdom, and hope. ~ Candy Lightner

The Connection between Happiness and Physical Well-Being -

This is important information, the scientific findings of Dr. Derek Cox’s 2005 study claims "If you are happy you are likely in the future to have less in the way of physical illness than those who are unhappy.” Others agree.

Miranda Hitti, of WebMD Medical News, shared the results of a study of British civil servants. "Our findings indicate that positive affective states are related to favorable profiles of functioning in several biological systems and may thereby be relevant to risk of development of physical illness.” So there it is…being happy may be good for your physical health.

Right now, being happy may seem impossible. In order to counter the effects of bereavement and grief, you’ve got to make the commitment to strong self-care practices: eat well, get your rest, and exercise.

I hear you saying, quite disbelievingly, “Are there any?”

The answer is “yes.” Allowing yourself to grieve leads to emotional and spiritual healing.

What can you do to grieve effectively?

Confront the feelings of grief by defining and naming them.
Talk about your feelings with others.
Resolve and forgive past wrongs.
Make plans for the future.
Live in the present.
Try to relax whenever possible.
Enjoy and celebrate life's joys and pleasures.
Leave a legacy.
How can you do that? Think about how you want to be remembered. Tell your life story. Document your special memories in a journal, or on audio or video tape.

“Happiness is beneficial for the body, but it is grief that develops the powers of the mind.” ~ Marcel Proust
