Maternal Su***de Awareness Week. Brings to light... The realities of new motherhood and the increased risk for su***de throughout this vulnerable season.

Su***de has been identified as a leading cause of maternal death. In fact, research has shown that women who are diagnosed with postpartum depression have an increased risk for su***de lasting up to eighteen years postpartum.
Friends and loved ones often worry that by bringing this topic up - they could increase the risk of su***de. However, research shows the opposite to be true. By asking directly: "Are you having thoughts of su***de?" You actually lower the risk and help to prevent occurrence.
If you are experiencing thoughts of su***de, feel helpless, hopeless, or alone - perhaps as though you're drowning, as if you weren't meant to be a mother, or as though your family would be better off without you?
If someone shares plans to harm themselves, the means to harm themselves, and/or intent to harm themselves?
Please seek immediate mental health support.
