Digital Eye Strain
Research is showing a rise in the detection of visual problems because of the number of hours spent in front of a computer. Uncorrected hyperopia or myopia, astigmatism and wearing multifocals can all make computer use less comfortable and efficient. Depending on your condition, your eyes could be exerting extra effort to focus or be forced to work harder to maintain a clear image when viewing the screen. Even people with perfect vision may experience symptoms such as blurred vision, eye strain, and headaches with improper computer use. To ensure comfortable and efficient computing, visit your optometrist for a throughout eye exam. Your Optometrist will need to know:
- How many hours a day you use a computer
- The distance from your eyes to your screen
- The overall set up of your work station and your main work tasks
- The type and location of lighting in your computer area
An Optometrist will advise you if you suffer from digital eye strain, or if your ocular discomfort is the result of a more serious vision or health problem. To help reduce the risk of digital eye strain, consider the following tips:
- Position your screen about an arms length from your eyes and 20 degrees below your eye level.
- Set colour and contrast tones to suit your eyes and match the brightness of your screen with your surroundings.
- Minimize reflected glare on your screen by using dimmer switches on lights and a protective, anti glare screen cover and position your screen so that it is perpendicular to windows and other bright light sources.
- Keep your screen free of fingerprints and dust.
- If you alternate between looking at your screen and paperwork, consider obtaining a clipboard that attaches along side your monitor so that the two are at the same working distance.
- Use the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes take a 20 second break and focus your eyes on something at least 20 feet away. This will give your eyes a much-needed break and reduce some of the symptoms mentioned earlier.
- Remember to blink! Did you know that on average we blink 12 times per minute, but when looking at a computer we only blink 5 times per minute. That can add up to dry eyes. Relieve that discomfort by using artificial tears or gels and remembering to blink.
- Ask for an anti-reflective coatings on the lenses of your glasses, which can be applied at the time of manufacturing, which will allow for more comfortable viewing of screens, fluorescent, and LED lights.
Symptoms of headaches, eye strain, blurred vision, eye irritation, double vision, excessive tearing or dry eyes and excessive blinking or squinting are all comma effects of digital eye strain. Any time you experience these symptoms, your should visit your optometrist for a comprehensive eye health examination to rule out more serious vision problems.

November is National Diabetes Awareness month.
Along with other health issues Diabetes can cause visual health concerns. Diabetic Retinopathy is the most serious eye problem associated with diabetes. It occurs when there is a weakening or swelling of the tiny blood vessels in the retina of your eye. This may result in blood leakage, the growth of new blood vessels, and other changes. If diabetic retinopathy is left untreated, blindness can result.
Can Vision loss from Diabetic Retinopathy be prevented?
Yes, in a routine eye examination, your Doctor of Optometry can provide helpful diagnoses that may be treated to prevent blindness. It is important to detect diabetic retinopathy early, as treatment is more likely to be successful, as once damage has occurred, the effects can be permanent.
How is Diabetic Retinopathy treated?
In the early stages, diabetic retinopathy is monitored through eye health examinations. If necessary, it may be treated with intraocular injections of anti-VEGF therapy, laser therapy, or intraocular surgery.
Are there risk factors for developing Diabetic Retinopathy?
Several risk factors that increase the risk of developing diabetic retinopathy include:
- Poorly controlled blood sugar levels
- The number of years you have had diabetes
- Smoking
- High blood pressure
- Drinking alcohol
- Pregnancy
How can Diabetes-Related eye problems be prevented and managed?
1. See your Optometrist for a thorough eye examination when you are first diagnosed with diabetes for a complete assessment including retinal evaluation, and regularly after that as directed by your Optometrist
2. Monitor and maintain control of your diabetes
3. See your physician regularly and follow instructions about diet, exercise, and medication
