Shiatsu is based on the concept of “referred pain”. That is, pain can sometimes be felt in other areas of the body other than the original location of the injury or malady. For example, appendicitis pain may be felt in other areas of the body other than where the appendix is located. In theory, if pain can be expressed through alternate areas of the body, applying pressure to these areas can then send messages back to the body and elicit a healing response. There are several variations of Shiatsu therapy, however, my practice follows the Japanese Namikoshi Kata where pressure is applied to over 800 points of the body using thumbs, fingers, and the palms in a rhythmic and ordered fashion. I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis 6 years ago and my Rheumatologist and family doctor advised me to try massage to maintain mobility, however, traditional remedial massages usually resulted in an arthritic flareup. Chiropractic treatments did the same. One day, I saw an ad for a Shiatsu treatment and thought I would give it a try. To my amazement, I felt great after without a flare up. After the second treatment I noticed an improvement in my mobility, level of stiffness, and sleep patterns. How is Shiatsu different from a remedial massage treatment?
