So I haven’t posted in a long time. I guess I’ve been too busy enjoying every minute of the last 10 years of Speak To Me Speech and Language.

Yes! 10 YEARS since I started this journey! Looking forward to continuing to serve the Weyburn area for many more years to come!

Special thanks to Carey Lamoureaux of Treehouse Speech Therapy for being an incredible mentor and friend, answering all my questions, providing guidance and just being an amazing person.

Thank you to Angela Bedore! 5 years ago I realized I needed help to keep up with the demand for service and could not believe my luck when Ang agreed to join me. After working as a speech assistant with the public schools under Amy Burton, Ang brought all her amazing energy, love for our kiddos, knowledge and understanding.

Thank you to the Family Place for allowing us to partner with you to provide services to students in Mini-Go. We both love our Mini-Go mornings!

Thank you to our former Estevan clients! For several years we travelled weekly to Estevan to provide services there. As much as we enjoyed our trips down the highway and our time with our clients there, things just got too busy and we had to focus on just Weyburn.

Thanks to Ocean Man Education Complex and Ocean Man First Nation for allowing me to work with your children. I have learned so much from the relationships and culture/language that I will cherish forever.

Special thanks to all the wonderful kids and super supportive parents we’ve worked with over the years.

And thank you to all the future clients! I look forward to many more years helping children in our community reach their full communication potential!

This is so true!! Often parents and caregivers see us playing with our kiddos and wonder why we aren’t drilling them on speech. The thing is, playing is how kids learn best!! When you see us playing, we definitely have goals we are working on with the kids! They are having fun and learning at the same time!! (But this is still super hard work for them so they may need to take a break from the play too and that is A-OK!!!)

WHEN IN DOUBT, CHECK IT OUT!!!

It’s no secret that I loathe the wait and see approach - but I do think many parents don’t realize that they can seek evaluations without a referral or (adamantly) request referrals when “wait and see” is recommended.

ESPECIALLY if you (or anyone else) are concerned, a child is frustrated, or the child isn’t meeting milestones (check out my milestone guide on Instagram for more info!)

In the US: call early intervention for 0-3 and your school district for 3-21 for free evaluations, and you can also check with your insurance to see if and how much it covers for private therapy!

Found this lovely bit of info on Mrs Speechie P page. She always has fantastic info to share!!

Did you know Stimming serves a key purpose = regulation?! It does! And did you know that if kids are dysregulated, they will have a significantly harder time accessing and learning new language skills, learning in school, and interacting with others? It’s true! So free the stim- let them stim- accept the stim!

Being able to stim freely and openly is a GAME CHANGER for neurodivergent kids. And to support this, it’s a good idea to talk about it openly and explain why kids do it and that’s it’s ok! ❤️

Get ‘em while they’re young!!! This is really a “thing”. The sooner the better so don’t wait!!

Having a delay in speaking puts your child at risk for difficulties in reading, writing and spelling later in life so it is extremely important to get support early!! Early intervention leads to future success!! What can help?? Regular therapy is important for building success!! Make sure to get to your weekly appts and practice all the skills you work on in therapy, at home!! Make it a part of your regular routine by practicing as you eat supper or as you drive in the car!! This makes for a more natural practice setting!! Your kiddos will just think you are “chatting” when you are really practicing skills!!

Borrowed this awesome reminder from Fighting for My Voice: My Life with Verbal Appraxia

Apraxia reminders from an adult with Verbal Apraxia!
1.) Apraxia is a neurological speech disorder. Meaning, this isn’t something that goes away. However, treatment utilizing the motor principles of planning in speech therapy has helped me tremendously.
2.) There is no age when your child “should” be speaking. We as a society can put so much pressure on when a child “should” be doing certain things. What if we celebrated as those things came along instead?
3.) Apraxia doesn’t need “fixing” but proper services and accommodations. I believe this one speaks for itself.
4.) There’s no right way to speak. There is not. We all talk differently, isn’t that beautiful?
5.) Apraxia is known as inconsistent speech errors. Meaning, we may be able to say one word fine one moment, but then the next moment, we may be unable to say that word at all.
What would you add to the list? 💙
Love,
Jordan Christian
