Wanda Joyce Bartlett, of Weyburn, Saskatchewan, passed away on March 2, 2026, at the age of 63, following a sudden and unexpected illness. She was born on August 31, 1962, in Fort Qu’Appelle, Saskatchewan, to Ken and Joyce Bartlett.
Wanda faced her final days with the same determination and strength that defined her life. She battled hard, as anyone who knew her would expect. Her fight was courageous, but her mountain proved too tall to climb. She passed surrounded by family.
Wanda was deeply committed to her community and to the labour movement, where she was known as a fierce, principled, and steady champion for working people. Rising from the rank and file, she dedicated decades of her life to fighting for fairness, dignity, and respect—not for herself, but for working people.
She was first elected to the Saskatchewan Federation of Labour Executive Council at just 18 years old and went on to serve for decades in many roles, including Recording Secretary and Vice‑President representing her union, the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU). She later served as President of the RWDSU Saskatchewan Joint Board, Labour Vice‑President of the Saskatchewan New Democratic Party, a provincial councillor, and often as President of the Weyburn constituency. She also led the Weyburn & District Labour Council; in many ways, Wanda was the labour movement in Weyburn.
Though she held many titles, much of Wanda’s service came without title or recognition. Many will remember her as steadfast, reliable, and a fountain of wisdom and history. She carried responsibility, she carried history, and she carried people with her—always thinking about the collective, and always ready to stand up for others.
Wanda was also a proud employee of Prairie Sky Co‑op in Weyburn, where she received her 45‑year service award last year. Her commitment to co‑operative values and working people was not just professional—it was deeply personal and lived every day.
Her compassion extended beyond people to animals. Wanda was a devoted supporter of the Humane Society and a lifelong lover of cats. She adopted many cats over the years, offering them loving homes and unwavering care. Her advocacy for animal welfare reflected the same kindness and sense of responsibility that guided every part of her life.
Wanda found great joy in live performances of all kinds, from plays and musicals to concerts, with a particular love for classic rock. She rarely missed an opportunity to experience music and theatre in person, finding happiness in the shared energy of live events. Though often quiet, she also possessed a sharp wit and a distinct, hearty laugh—expressions of the warmth, humour, and presence that quietly defined her.
Wanda was a beloved sister, aunt, and great‑aunt. She is survived by her sister, Star Parker (Harvey), and her brother, Scott Bartlett (Deborah); her nephews Robbie Parker (Lisa), Kris Parker (Michelle), Brett Parker (Katie), Cody Parker, Dustin Bartlett (Sarah), and Sean Bartlett; her great‑nephews Brady (Sarah), Lucas, and Thomas; and her great‑nieces Kaitlyn, Adelaide, and Everly.
She was predeceased by her parents, Ken and Joyce Bartlett.
Wanda’s legacy lives on not only in the positions she held, but in the generations of activists she inspired, mentored, and steadied along the way. Her movement, her community, and her family will carry the flag forward.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Weyburn Humane Society, P.O. Box 1062, Weyburn, SK, S4H 2L3 in Wanda’s honour.
An Interment will be held at the Tyvan Cemetery, Tyvan, SK on Saturday, May 16, 2026 at 10:30 a.m. with officiant Judy Beck. A Service of Remembrance will follow at the McKenna Hall, 317 3rd Street N.E. Weyburn, SK. Luncheon will be held at the McKenna Hall as well following the service.
