Education is the backbone of my physio practice.

Patient Education: It is imperative patients understand their anatomy, the functions of their body, their condition/injury/illness, why I am selecting certain treatments, and how they are the ones that are going improve their condition through the game plan we create together.

Personal Eduction: I am continuously learning and progressing my skills and practice as I go by reading research, taking courses, and attending conferences. Last week I spent 4 days attending the American Urogynecologic Society and Canadian Society for Pelvic Medicine combined Annual Pelvic Floor Disorder conference, where the newest research in the field was presented.

Teaching: By teaching other physios I stay up to date on what is being taught in the current courses and have the opportunity to speak to students about their education and practice. It also allows me to reflect on my own practice, why I do things how I do, and how that can be improved upon. This last Sunday I was lab instructing the Level 1 pelvic floor course with

Public Education: Providing physiotherapy education, particularly pelvic health, for local communities and organizations spreads the word on how people can be aware when to seek medical attention and empower them to apply preventative measures for their health. I love research! I love research being performed in Canada. And I especially love seeing grant funding to SMS, a rare disease that effect someone I love.

The Smith-Magenis Syndrome Research Foundation is excited to share some incredible news! McGill University–supported Professor Dr. Wei-Hsiang Huang has just received a $1,025,100 five-year grant from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research to continue his groundbreaking SMS research. This project will investigate the molecular pathogenesis of Smith-Magenis syndrome and advance therapeutic approaches using hiPSC-derived neuronal models. Importantly, some of the preliminary data that made this grant possible were generated thanks to support from the SMSRF. Dr. Huang noted how vital the SMSRF grant has been in positioning his lab to secure this major Canadian award. Dr. Huang estimates the annual cost of his research at approximately $500,000, making this funding a critical step forward. This success is not only a testament to his dedication but also to the collective strength of the SMS community and its donors, who help fuel research that moves the science forward. This grant is a true beacon of hope for the SMS community. Please join us in celebrating Dr. Huang’s remarkable achievement—and in recognizing how your support of SMSRF plays a direct role in making milestones like this possible!
